I am considering getting rid of my HSE (fully optioned) for a 2004 Disco S with a nice off-road kit including roof rack,ARB front bumper, (no winch) steel wheels with 255-85 truxus tires, the 2" suspension needs changed to an Old Man Emu kit but other than that it looks pretty good. Do you folks think I'm nuts for considering this trade. I have to date not one problem with my LR3 and I do use this truck off-road. I had a 04 Disco prior to the LR3 and it worked well in difficult terrain. Any input is welcome
Moe.

What do you think the Disco04 will do better than your LR3? (Why the trade?)

These "What do I want" questions crack me up.

I just went the other way and I would never look back. I traded an '04 Disco for an '05 LR3 that the local dealer had sitting on the lot and I absolutely love the LR3! The '04 felt a little more "old worldly" than the LR3, but I haven't missed the solid axles, cramped interior, side swing rear door that constantly needed adjustment, etc, etc, etc. I like all of the Land Rover line up, but the LR3 is definitely a step up IMHO.

I've never owned a Disco but I can't imagine it really comparing to the LR3 offroad. With the cross-linking in the air suspension, I don't even know if solid axles are a benefit. If your HSE has the HD package, then I wouldn't even consider this.

Todd's question may've been the most poignant...what does the Disco offer that the LR3 doesn't do as well or better?

"old worldy" is a very good way to put it. I sorta miss my old Rangie for it's quirkiness. It's amazing how obsolete it became when I got the LR3. If I had kept it, it wouldn't have gotten much use though. The plus side for the '04 is that you can mod the suspension and put pretty much any size tire you want on it. And you can probably get one awfullly cheap. The downside is driving it on road, and not being under warranty...

I hear you roverman! I have a '95 soft dash LWB in the fleet right now and the only reason it's still around is that it looks pretty in the shop! It is a fun truck to take wheeling locally, but I wouldn't want to drive it any further than the state line when I have the LR3 and a new RR HSE sitting in the garage. I see the '04 and earlier Discos going the way of the Classics-a great truck, and very capable, but you have to WANT to own one...

You all have great talking points and they do make sense. Roverman, I like what you said about the warranty, that alone makes the decision easy. I have owned most older models,D-90s, RRC, and a 64 series, all were great but the LR3 has been a pleasure to drive and own.
It also has taken some difficult trail sections and made it seem easy. And yes it is equipped with the HD package. ( my Rover obsession must temporarily be in full effect) Thanks guys

Yeah, I can see the need to swap if you are running that 5-10% of the worlds trails that the LR3 can't due do to limited ground clearance. Otherwise, the LR3 is so much better in every category, I would have to wonder what you are looking to accomplish.

Rubicon:
DII with lots of Mod's
LR3 with lots of dents
