Yes, that is exactly what happened. It acted like that for a while, until the wire split completely in half. Then always stuck on empty. Good luck, it would certainly be worth it to check the wires before dropping the tank and changing senders.- Matthewwrn

Can smell gas through vents on startup
My 06 LR3 has the same issue, more so when it is cold outside as well. I have researched and from what I have found, it may be the o-rings on the fuel rail.
