    Oil Change/Basic Maitanence Questions

It's one of the easiest vehicles to change oil and filter and if you have your own grease gun you can wiggle around underneath and hit all the grease fittings without having to use a jack. My 97 Disco is the greatest. The kids love the jump seats and I love driving it!

    Changing Front Shocks

My 97 Disco with 65000 miles needs new front shocks. From reviewing the Haynes and Shop manuals, the job doesn't look too hard but with my Disco I've learned to expect the unexpected. Anyone with experience with this task please let me know what to expect. Also, what brand shocks should I...

    Oil Pan removal

Isn't "Great Stuff" for insulating or filling holes around pipes or openings in your house? Won't the foam be eaten up by engine fluids? If not, sounds like it's a good product to use although I used a gasket and auto gasket sealer when I put my pan back after cleaning the strainer. Thanks

Please help..new purchase ..got stuck on way home...

Also, should'nt a new gasket be used when the pan is reinstalled. The sway bar will drop or swing down after you undo the set of bolts holding the bushings on either side.

Please help..new purchase ..got stuck on way home...

I had the exact same problem with my 97 DISCO with 63000 miles as I was driving home with my purchase. The oil light came on after about 15 minutes of highway driving. I stopped, checked the oil level which was ok and sat for an hour. Started up again and drove home. The light came back on...

cdl lever moves but does not engage

Oil is changed. Now that I am driving with the CDL unlocked, I notice a big change in handling and MPG (about 50% better). Great Great site!

cdl lever moves but does not engage

Followed the instructions from the website and I got the cdl unlocked!!! I drove it locked for 1200 miles and didn't know it. I'm sure that my rear differential gears (broken teeth on the gears and whirring noise) got screwed up because of this. That's been fixed too and now I'm ready for...

cdl lever moves but does not engage

Thanks discomike: More questions about the CDL: When attempting to engage or disengage the lock using a 13mm socket, can you do it from underneath the truck or should you go through the consol? Can you turn the socket by hand? If I was looking down at the cdl from above, which way...

    2003 Disco Gas Mileage problems

Generall for discos, is MPG significantly lower when the CDL is locked as opposed to unlocked?

Whirring Noise was broken gear in rear differential

Put new rear end in my 97 disco and that fixed the noise. Now the ABS light is on and stays on. Is there a reset or should I check the connections again? Still have the cdl shifter issue but I will try to put in lock-unlock with a 13mm socket this weekend. Thanks for all of your...

cdl lever moves but does not engage

Shifter broken or bent is very possible. When I took off the knob and boot and removed the rubber mat, I saw that the plastic consol around the shifter (on the locked-low side) was badly cracked and it looked like someone was really trying to jam the thing over into lock. As I said, I had...

cdl lever moves but does not engage

The light was never on and I drove off from the point of purchase in November with it in high lock. I have not driven it since Christmas because I have not figured this out yet.

Lever will not move to the right at all.

cdl lever moves but does not engage

I can't get it to shift over to the high side but I did notide the bolt head underneath which appears to block the shifter rod and I thought the same thing. That could be blocking it. But I drove off when I bought it in November with the shifter in high lock. I didn't know to test it...

cdl lever moves but does not engage

Mine's a 97, no light comes on in either high or low. I pulled the console and went underneath and cleaned everything with solvent spray. It is definitely frozen but is it possible for the shifter to frozen on the locked side and the lock be disengaged?

cdl lever moves but does not engage

Could the cdl be stuck in "high" unlocked with the shifter in "high" locked ? I bought my 97 disco and the cdl shifter was in "high-lock" I drove it over a 1000 miles all the while reading these posts and finally seeing in my owners manual and in a post that you will ruin the transfer case if...

    Whrrring noise when coasting

Broken gear tooth My trusted mechanic said that there is a gear tooth broken in the rear differential and that the outer tie-rods are shot. The broken gear tooth seems like a reasonable explanation for the whirring noise. What do you think. Now for the transfer box. If the selector...

    Whrrring noise when coasting

I've had it for 2 months and the sound began last week. The truck has regular all-terrain tires (Michelins).

    Whrrring noise when coasting

No Light and the car drove great on the highway. But my heart sank when I looked in the owner's manual and saw the warning that you should not do normal driving with it in lock mode. As I drove the truck to my mechanic I was thinking u-joints because it drove fine but for the whirring noise...

    Whrrring noise when coasting

Well I dropped it off at a trusted mechanic's shop and drove it over there. No clunks or loud noises just the whirring. Maybe something less serious. What do you think? Thanks for the insights.

    Whrrring noise when coasting

Transfer Box Well I was afraid of that. I owe my wife an apology. The selector was on lock (high) when I bought it and I did not know until I read the owner's manual Monday that the differential should not be in "lock" for normal driving. I took off the boot and shifter knob on the consol...

    Whrrring noise when coasting

Thanks Disco men. Added some oil. Didn't need much. Now I am going to hit all the grease fittings I can find and lube it up. Now a stupid question. Where should the drive selector be on the 4wd shifter for normal driving. Should it be on the right on the "H" or the left? And when on...
