Hi, this is my first post on this site, and to start off I have a few questions.

First off though, my 2001 Tiburon that I drive was just totaled 2 nights ago, and so now I am left with a sum somewhere of around 9-10 grand. I've been wanting a discovery for quite sometime, and have been looking at several Discovery II's.

However when I called the Land Rover Dealership and a couple of other local mechanic shops, they quoted me 100-150$ just for an oil change. I was told by someone else I would need special tools just to change the oil. I also was told by this person that these tools are hard to get, and very expensive themselves. The last thing this person said is that it is very difficult for an individual to change the oil in one of these vehicles compared to my Tiburon, or the Ford Explorer that I drove in the past.

So my questions are: 1.)Where is the best place to order oil filters for this car?

2.) Is it truly harder to change the oil in a Disco-II than in most american SUV's?
3.) Are there any special tools I will need to change the oil? If so please list them.
4.) Are there any other comments that you guys might add before I get myself into this whole thing?

Please respond as quickly as possible with your answers, as I am trying to find a car as quickly as possible seeing as I have no personal means of transportation at the moment.

All those people are full of it. Oil changes are simple. You'll need a 27mm (17/16") socket. Cheapo filter is PH16 I believe...

Unscrew, drain, plug, unscrew, fill, plug. Drive

Moose is right, those people don't know what they're talking about. In fact, I think it would be easier on a Discovery than on a Tiburon. Could you see the oil filter on that car? Just do it yourself. It's easy to get underneath due to the ground clearance. Just make sure you get a big drain pan. Well, you might get by with a little one, it just depends on how much leaks out between changes. (just kidding of course!)

It's one of the easiest vehicles to change oil and filter and if you have your own grease gun you can wiggle around underneath and hit all the grease fittings without having to use a jack.

My 97 Disco is the greatest. The kids love the jump seats and I love driving it!

The only recommendation for oil changes I would have is a nice splash guard.... to keep the oil off of the drivers front wheel, but I can change mine without even jacking it up.

My car and van on the other hand you had better have a jack handy.

Easy as pie to change the oil. On my 2003 I have a cover to remove to replace the filter underneath. My LR Dealer only charges me the diff. between synthetic and dino oil as they are still complimentry!

I did change it when I got the truck and used my friends Porsche garage to do the oil change .... less mess and strain (was also early March with snow!). Make sure the oil pan is large as these units hold almost 8 liters of oil!

Don'r be afraid to get a Disco II ... great truck! if they do come with the Good Year tires ... replace them. I installed Yokohama Geolander HTS G052 and noticed a big difference! Better wet and snow traction, stiffer sidewalls which improved steering and less rolling resistance, my TC and ABS only come on 1/4 the time which may save the wear on the brakes and a better feel for the road. this will get me out of trouble earlier!!!
