The 8 speed looks pretty good, it has 6th gear as 1:1. It also has a numerically higher first gear so it would feel like a power gain off the line after a swap.
It sounds to me like your alternator isn't putting out enough amps. I'd replace that if it isn't already fresh. Or you could measure the amp draw during the problem phase and compare the result with the required amount.
Get a baseline dyno run so you can compare them after the swap. I looked for a shop in Vegas to do a 4wheel dyno and found one that did my control arms, but didn't go back since I ran out of time. But it would be interesting to see how much power it puts down to the ground and what the power...
I didn't go the drawer route. I use gear bags instead and that enabled the conversion the area when the weather is bad from sleeping to a workspace with space for a 27" monitor, 17" laptop and a tower PC. Its a pretty sweet setup. Collapsing all the rear seats completely so there is a flat space...
On the front doors a light also illuminates the ground as well as the computer waking up and powering on the displays. Its an expensive operation to open the front doors. With the auto dome light off, the doors still light up the ground.
The battery disconnect would work. The impact is my...
For the new Defender they need to evolve the system and add a city/country mode. It is convenient to get inside and have it already booting up with the lights on, but that isn't practical when camping.
Is that battery AGM? Searching for LR104508 doesn't indicate if it is AGM. I might have the charger set wrong. I thought it was lead acid but I don't see the fill caps and starting to think its AGM.
Is there a voltage where the LR4 brain will stop turning on the door lights and booting up the dash to conserve power to start the engine? I don't have a battery issue, but I'm camping around it and opening the door seems like it costs a lot of battery drain.
I bought a Battery Tender Jr...
The 6 speed is pretty nice. It has 2 overdrive gears. 4th will go up or down any freeway and then there are two overdrive gears. 5th is a sweet gear for going down 7% grades. I don't need to touch the brakes at all.
Tbh, I wouldn't know what to do with 2 more gears. There might be a point...
I mixed the Land Rover coolant with Dexcool and it seemed fine. Is there any damage that occurs from doing that? I actually liked it better with Dexcool because it has a stronger pink color that contrasted well with the reservoir and it was quicker to spot the fluid level.
The leak could be an input seal if its coming from the transmission. The seal around the input shaft can fail and leak tranny fluid. I had that problem with an old TH400 and the only way to fix it was to pull the trans and in the bell housing behind the torque converter is where the seal is...
Check your t-case oil level. It could also be engine oil, its hard to tell. Feel up top in that first pic position and see if you can determine where else its wet to trace it back to the source unless the source is that cylinder looking feature. What part is that?
I've got a 1/3 gal of Land Rover coolant that I carry around and plenty of water. I trust my LR4 now and so far so good. All the plastic crossovers and t-stat are fresh. This is my rad leak from going through the timing chain last month. It was replaced with a Land Rover brand radiator, but the...
I've been eyeing those latches. Installing one seems pretty involved for me. What I'm doing now to get out of the back is before I get in I latch the receiving end of the window on the tailgate and close the window with the gate up. Then in the AM I just push the window open and climb over the...
Crossing the river on NV-163. Its the highway that takes you into Laughlin from Vegas. Its a nice drive and there are public places to go checkout the river.
The LR4 does the uphill part of grades nicely. Plenty of high revving torque. My first grade in the LR4 was down to Laughlin and the Colorado river. It was pretty fun to drive over the river. I used Sport mode and 4th gear went a long ways to keep speed down. I didn't need to use the brakes at...
I smelt burning coolant in my LR4 while offroading the other day, but the level was the same the next day. Historically, I've been finding my leaks by looking for wet areas and tracing back to the source. A black light would be sweet.
Its important to journal, but I'm not getting analytical about costs. There really isn't anything out there like the LR4. You'd never see a loaded 4Runner or a Land Cruseir at the top of the grade first before the LR4. The 305CI V8 has way more balls and that by itself is priceless.
The LR4 is amazing off-road. I finally took it out of the city after buying it in July and doing a lot of work to it to address known issues. I appreciate everyone's help here because I couldn't have done it without the community.
I found a dirt bike trail to take it on with a full load of gear...
