Crazy to consider new engine in a 2016 LR4?
It's a test that looks the other way around from how you're thinking about it: it looks for exhaust gas dissolved in the coolant, which should never occur. It's a chemical dye that reacts to certain hydrocarbons by changing color, IIRC. Common test. -

Probably, or hydrolocked on startup. When you have coolant in the cylinders burning, you'll know it. White smoke (doesn't dissipate like steam does) that smells kind of sweet. I suppose another possible escape path (less likely) that would avoid the white smoke is into the oil reservoir. There... -

Followup to this thread: the issue returned. And it had followed the coil, which I had put in Cylinder 4 this time, and made sure the connector was seated. So it's a coil with an intermittent problem. It DOES happen. -

What I remember from doing my own procedure was that the hose with the thermostat is amazingly complex and hard to reach to work on it in situ. If I hadn’t first pressure tested the system, I would not have found that one of the clamps I had put on wasn’t seated properly. Vacuum fill wouldn’t... -

OK, NVM about the puddle light. Apparently the control module that works on that wants to see a bulb plugged into that connector before the main battery is reconnected, or else it just decides not to shunt power in that direction. But my question about that connector still stands: what’s it for? -

I hope, but I doubt it; the fuel trim code has been happening on long trips long before the misfire started. Nobody knows whether it’s normal for some smoke to escape from the PCV when the intake is pressurized to 1psi? -

Possible if the heat exchanger split or developed a leak. Do you have any kind of feel for how long you’ve been driving it in that condition? If it were me, after figuring out where the leak occurred and fixing it (e.g. replacing the exchanger), I’d look for shops that could do a genuine flush... -

One other thing on this before I put it to bed. That test I did where I pulled the coil off the plug to see what cylinder was actually misfiring? Those coils are strong! I had to pull the coil out pretty far before the misfire started. But…I have never felt like I got a satisfying “click” when... -

OK, thank you. Do you have any suggestions for what I should look at to gauge whither cometh this "P0170-00 (27) Fuel trim (bank 1)" that keeps getting triggered? It doesn't seem to affect performance, but it sure doesn't give a guy warm fuzzy feelings to see the engine light come on on the dash. -
