My wife has the RR sport 2010 and loves it.... I bought the 2011 LR4 and also love it....Hers has much better pickup and handles a lot better....Is that normal? Should the ride be similar since the engines and transmissions are the same? Any help will be greatly appreciated...

Hi,

Even thought the RR Sport is based on the LR4 platform and shares a lot of mechanicals, the two trucks are really diferent in handling. As for acceleration, I'm suprised that there is that much difference unless she has the supercharged version.

The sport rides a bit lower and has more aggresive street tires that are wider and the wheels are also wider and that stretches the tires a bit too.. Not stretching like a rubber band, but it puts more rubber on the road. When the contact patch of the tire and the road is larger, you get better grip.

I'm guessing that there are suspension bits that also help the Sport ride and handle different as well as a lowered center of gravity.

The sport does weigh about 200 pounds less than the LR4. It would make a difference in acceleration, but I wouldn't think that much that you would notice it as a dramatic difference.

Must be nice to have two such great trucks at your house.

I show nearly 300lb difference. 5833 vs 5540 based on msn auto data. That could definitely give you noticeable difference in acceleration feel. Also RRS has smaller overall tire diameter (255/55/19 vs 255/50/19) which means, if overall gear ratios are same, smaller tire should give you better acceleration.

RRS is geared towards people who drive their car on road most of the time. so its meant to be better on the road then all of Land Rovers other vehicles. your LR4 is targeted to people who will go off road, not that that RRS can't, its very good off road, but it is targeted as a street SUV.

Your LR4 is supposed to drive like a true 4x4, have some play for off-roading tolerances, if it was too taught, it'd break.

The RRS is meant for street more than off-road, it's designed to be more like a sports car. If you were hoping to get that from an LR4, you made the wrong purchase.

The LR4 is absolutely amazing, too bad you're comparing it to the RRS, which is a completely different animal. Did you know anything about the LR4 before you bought it?

Am interested in this thread since we have a new LR4 and I have a new car, but have realized I prefer the ride/view of a truck or SUV. I am thinking about swapping my E350 for a Sport and while the LR4 will be our primary mountain/snow car am researching what might be the best complement to our LR4.

I just drove the RR Sport HSE while my LR4 was in for service. I have to admit that both my wife and I felt like the RR was quicker than the LR even though the engines, transmissions and final drives are identical. The 300lb weight difference would be roughly like 30HP increase which fells about right.

Time to put the LR4 on a diet.

I was checking out the RRS HSE today and to be honest, I wasn't overly excited as I thought I'd be. I've wanted one for a while now, but after comparing our LR4s against it, quality to quality, it's not that much better... it's just smaller and quicker and very car-like... and it didn't have that LR feel, height, strength I like. I think it's absolutely perfect though for a city dweller. Now, as for the Range Rover HSE, now that one is VERY impressive and that'll definitely be added to the garage this spring. Will likely get one used, one- or two-years old since they lose about 40% of their value the first two years. I can't see paying 80K and seeing it on the used market two-years later for 48K. Just doesn't make sense to me.

The LR4(knock on wood) really is an impressive vehicle. We had family in town for the holidays and comfortably got seven people in it and then later reconfigured it and took up to the mountains. We have both the LR4 and the RRS and unless you get the SC version of the RRS than if I were choosing between one or the other I would go with the LR4.

When we got the RRS we also looked at the Range Rover, but it just felt too big to me which is why we went with the RSS.

Willw, totally agree. The RRS is great, I'd take one no question. But comparing one to the other, the LR4 HSE (7 seater) is a great value and the fit and finish is equal IMO. It's just a matter of driving style, needs. I also love that the LR4 has so much natural light inside and everyone who's driven in the car loves it. It drives very nice, off road it's amazing, and the overall uniqueness (not one on every block) makes the LR family the best. Yes, the Range Rover is a tank... I thought the hood was big on the LR4, the Range Rover bonnet is like looking over a king sized bed! I wish I could have all three! :)
