Hello Munkymush………

Could be several things:

1: This could be normal depending on the magnitude and type of noise. Pumps make noises, but maybe not the noise your speaking of. Since I cannot hear it, it’s difficult to decipher words into noises, and their magnitude.

2: electric fuel pump that feeds the injection pump is going bad or a ticking fuel shut off solenoid needs attention, whether being cleaned or loose line connectors or pump replacement.
This is a highly likely area since you posted the saying :
i can hear a buzzing noise or really fast ticking which seems to be coming from the injection pump when the ignition is switched on +the engine not running . .

3: This could be the end result of a non maintained injection system. Diesel injection systems are not water or dirt friendly, and will destroy a diesel injection supply pump and even the injection pump eventually. When was the last time this was serviced? Just being purchased used from a second party,

4: Contaminants in fuel system, most likely water and dirt in the bottom of the tank. This could require a full flushing. Diesel engines injection systems are not water or dirt or air friendly.

Per your post: im new so go easy on me I would highly recommend taking it to a reputable Land Rover shop, or highly recommended shop. I believe this would be in your best interest.

Without being there, and it being a second party vehicle, I would want to know the documented service history of this vehicle, and even this isn’t as helpful as being there myself. So without any technical information, and not being there, Taking it to a technician and getting a technical report is a step in the right direction.

I hope this helps......... Chongo :bandit:

Sorry about getting back with you this late, but the gate was an issue.
There’s 3 styles of injection systems that Land Rover uses to my knowledge. I only have information on the 99 and newer systems. I can’t remember if the 98’s had a poppet style or if it was similar to the 99 models
In the 99 and newer models the fuel pump is in the tank and the injectors are fired with an electric solenoid attached to the injectors. The only thing that is attached to the block is the fuel cooler. I need to know exactly what system you have, if it is the mechanical injection pump style on the side of the engine, instead of the pump in the tank. And yes they make a little noise, but shouldn’t be overbearing from the engine noise. I really can’t remember the system they have, the last one I worked on was in 1999.
I believe your system runs 2 pumps if I remember correctly, a transfer in the tank to feed the main pump - and a higher pressure pump mechanically driven at the engine, with electrically fired injectors. Earlier injection systems were fired by the camshaft just like Cummings design if I remember correctly.
Additives in the fuel will help and remove most of the water if not all. There are some additives that are available and help clean out the system.
Diesel fuel is a lubricant and a well serviced engine should last hundreds of thousands of miles, they are a self lubricating design.

If you have any further questions let me know and I’ll need to know what injection system you have.

Good luck happy new years……… Chongo
