HELLO ALL,

BEEN READING THROUGH THE THREADS TRYING TO FIND AN ANSWER. FOUND A FEW THINGS I THINK MIGHT HELP, BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD SEND MY QUESTION THROUGH ANYWAY. OK... MY 96' DISCO, HAS RECENTLY BEEN GIVING ME THE "POWER-IN POWER-OUT" EFFECT ON THE HIGHWAY OCCASIONALLY. USUALLY AROUND 70-80 MPH. PLUS......

ONCE IN A WHILE, AFTER THE VEHICLE RUNS FOR A WHILE, IF I WOULD TURN OFF THE TRUCK AND TRY TO RESTART IT, WITHIN 10-15 MINUTES IT WOULD NOT RESTART. BUT IF I LET IT SIT FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES OR SO, IT WOULD COOL DOWN AND FIRE BACK UP AND RUN PERFECT. I SHOULD SAY THAT THIS ONLY HAPPENED THREE TIMES IN THE PAST THREE MONTHS. ALL OTHER TIMES SHE RAN PERFECT.

NOW YESTERDAY IT WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THAT, AND DECIDED THAT MR. REDLIGHT IS A PERFECT TIME TO STALL ON ME. I TRIED RESTARTING; IF I WAITED 5 MINUTES, I WOULD GET A START THEN IT WOULD MISS LIKE CRAZY AND DIE. (ALL WITHIN 4 SECONDS). IF I WAITED 20 MINUTES, THEN SHE STARTED UP AND I WAS ABLE TO GET HER HOME. BUT, NOW I CAN'T GO ANYWHERE. AFTER THE INCIDENT, LATER THAT DAY I WENT ACROSS THE STREET TO THE GAS STATION AND SHE DIED IN FRONT OF THE PUMP. HAD TO WAIT TO GET HER HOME.

NEVER ONE TIME HAVE I THROWN A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I CHECKED MY FUEL PUMP AND I CAN HEAR IT KICK ON BY PUTTING MY HEAD TO THE TANK.
I CHECKED ALL CONNECTIONS IN PLUG WIRES. MY FIRST PLAN OF ATTACK IS NEW PLUGS AND WIRES, CAUSE I'M SURE IT NEEDS THEM. HOPEFULLY THAT WILL FIX MY PROBLEMS. IF NOT I'M THINKING FUEL FILTER AND BIGGER.

I DON'T KNOW, I HAVE TALKED TO MANY PEOPLE AND IM GETTING PLUGS/WIRES, 02 SENSORS, INJECTORS, FUEL PUMP, LOW BLINKER FLUID YOU NAME IT.

IM RULING OUT INJECTORS CAUSE I DON'T SMELL FUEL IN THE CABIN. 02 SENSORS, DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY GAS MILEAGE IS NOT AFFECTED, FUEL PUMP CAUSE I HEAR IT RUNNING. FUEL FILTER COULD BE, BUT I WOULD THINK I WOULD ALWAYS HAVE SOME TYPE OF PROBLEM, BUT I SHOULD CHANGE IT ANYWAY.

ANYWAY ANY ADVICE WOULD HELP. I'M THINKING OF BUYING THE CHEAP 30 DOLLAR BOSCH WIRES, SINCE I'M NOT SURE IF THATS MY PROBLEM. ARE THOSE OK? THANKS ALL!

First, and I am not an Internet god by a long shot.... when typing all CAPS is yelling.

Second. Get a fuel pressure gauge, I will bet money on either fuel filter or the pump is dead.... Remember just because you hear the pump doesn't mean it isn't real tired. It could be pumping, just not hard enought to start anything.

Sorry about the caps. It's a military thing. Anyway, So if my issue is the fuel pump, and or fuel filter. Why wouldn't I have a constant problem? Does it have something to do with pressure changes from high to low speed? Just curious.

What do you think about my plug and wires? At this point I think I'm starting to believe I have a fuel issue and not an ignition issue.

Thanks

How old are the plugs and wires? If you don't know, it can't hurt to change them.

When the fuel pump gets hot if it is going bad, that is when things stop working....

Kind of like shooting a weapon.... they are dead on when cold, but once it gets hot they tend not to shoot as straight...

Well I'm pretty sure it is my fuel pump now. I just found out that there is an access plate in the back cargo area. I thought you had to remove the fuel tank to get to it. I might just buy a new pump and install the new one myself. But the screws on the access plate are so rusty they are dissolving. So now I am gonna have to figure out how to get them all out. This is looking like a beeatch.
Also I'm not sure if a fuel pressure gauge will even tell me if it is bad. Due to the fact like you said that it will run fine when cold and then warm up and putter out. I may look into the pressure gauge. maybe buy one and return it when i'm done. ;)

What should the pressure tolerances be for a healthy fuel pump?

Thanks.

Well I got the access plate off. And I am 98% sure it is my fuel pump. Gonna order a new one from atlantic british for $200.00. And do it myself. Thanks for the link Joey. I've read alot of other posts you comment on and you are always very knowledgeable. Thanks

I'll update when I get her all wrapped up.

Hey funky stutters at 70+ mph sounds more like the VSS going bad...

When the VSS goes bad it sends too fast of a signal to the ECU, basically saying your going way over the allowed speed for the Disco, (say 150mph vice 110 allowed). Then the ECU cuts off so to speak to slow you down.

How do I fix a bad VSS? I was thinking it might be my fuel filter.
