I've asked beofre but didnt get a good answer. Can you install an aftermarket radio (Alpine) without cutting the cars wiring harness and without losing all the speakers or CD changer. Its a 99 DII. Also anyone have any good recommendations for a GPS Nav unit for the northeast US. Thanks

aftermarket head unit

hey, i have a disco 95 and i put in an aftermarket audio system, i have an alpine head unit also. you have to cut into the wire harness connected to the stock radio. if you go to circuit city or best buy they will do all that for you. you can do it yourself also but it will be difficult if you have never done it before. the best navigation you can buy for this car is a portable on or one that doesnt need to be wired into the cars electical system.

Does the aftermarket stereo still work using the switches on the instrument panel close to the steering wheel?

Only if the original wiring to your current radio & switches are connected to the aftermarket one you wish to buy. I wouldn't try connecting this up unless you know what you are doing.
