Daytime running lights are always on period. I think you are referring to the "auto" feature. They share the same sensor as the rain sensing wipers, are those still working?

Spend some quality time in front of a shiny store window.

It may be that you will have to spend some quality time in front of a shiny reflective store window.

That was how I figured out what does what. I have the Canada set up for daytime running lights. When they are on depends upon the sun, the setting of the headlight switch, and also where the gear selector is.

Below is how the DRL are supposed to function here in Canada.

Daytime Running Lamps (DRL)

DRL use the full intensity low beam headlamps which are permanently illuminated
when the vehicle is being driven. DRL are used in a number of markets and there are two systems to cover these markets, Canada and the EU, sort of. Below is for Canada.

DRL CANADIAN MARKET
DRL for this market use full intensity low beam headlamps. The side marker lamps, tail lights, and license plate lamps will be on, but instrument cluster illumination will be off.

DRL are active when the following parameters are met:

a) Parking brake is off on vehicles with manual transmission, or PARK is not selected on vehicles with automatic transmission.

b) Ignition switch is in the ignition position (II).

c) The central junction box receives an engine running signal.

d) The lighting control switch is in the off, auto, or side lamps position.

NOTE:
If the lighting control switch is moved to the headlamp position, DRL are deactivated and normal side lamp and headlamp functionality is operational.

NOTE:
Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) (where fitted) is not available when the DRL are active.

NOTE:
When DRL are active, the headlamp flash function using the left hand steering column multifunction switch will operate normally. The high beam headlamp function using the left hand steering column multifunction switch will be deactivated.

When the parking brake is applied on manual transmission vehicles or the selector lever is in the PARK position on automatic transmission vehicles, DRL are turned off. This is to reduce battery discharge during long periods of engine idling in cold climate conditions. When the parking brake is released or the selector lever is moved from the PARK position, normal DRL functionality is restored.

This function doesn't match the actual on my 05. The exterior lights are on regardless of transmission gear or parking brake setting. Only difference is the engine must be running for the lights to be on. I had my DRL's turned off because there was simply no way for me to turn off my headlights. Even with the switch in the parking position. I do not have the auto feature on mine which also removes the rain sensing wipers.

Sounding odd

Yeah, something is wrong. About all I can think of is to figure out what is working.

The simple guess is change out the switch as it is mechanical and not much money. Almost anything else seems to be some FET thing located on the Central Junction Box and that would not be good.

There is a 5 amp fuse, F18 that feeds the rain and ambient light sensor. I suppose if it were blown, the 3 might think it is night all the time. The question would then be the brightness of your dash message display back lighting. During the day, the green back lighting should be bright and then at night dim down. In the day, if it seems not bright, well maybe your 3 thinks it is night all the time.

To trouble shoot, the first thing to figure out is what is working.

Do you have:

a) front and rear fog lights and do they illuminate?
b) trailer lighting sockets and is anything back there non Land Rover?
c) all tail and brake lights functioning, including the reverse lights?
d) high beam - that is both the HID and both of the Halogen?

The rain and light sensor is hidden behind the mirror under a couple of pop off plastic faring halves and is supposed to be glued to the windscreen. A while back, I found that my sensor had become unclipped from the glass and was just sitting in there. It seemed to work as a light sensor, but not very well as a rain sensor. When I re clipped it, then the rain sensing wipers worked rather better. If you had a new windscreen installed, that is one place I would be looking as this sensor stuff is for the most part, a black art to glass kickers.

As to how the light sensor worked, I guess it was OK. With DRL, and the Auto setting, you always have headlights so the dash lighting is the only real clue.

I asked about the front fog lights as there is a relay R5 in the engine compartment that you may wish to remove for a bit. If it was defective, it might do something to the headlights as the purpose of the relay is to turn the fog lights off if high beam is selected; same thing if you use your high beam flash to pass function - the fogs go off when the high beams illuminate. This is where you need the store window again.

I am not being very helpful here, but it appears that your 3 thinks it is always night and always on the Auto setting as the headlights do go off when you exit the vehicle and the engine is off - I presume after about 30 seconds due to the exit delay?
