Engine noise

I have always had an 'extra' noise coming from the engine when accelerating. I guess it sort of sounds like a high pitched exhaust leak - sort of. I haven't really pinpointed it, other than to say that it comes from around the engine and not through the tailpipes. At any rate, it's a kind of cheap sound that detracts from the otherwise strong and healthy exhaust note. I plan on asking the dealer when I go in, but expect that they will say "that's what they all sound like".
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

p.s. Mine was a demo in it's prior life, could not breaking it in properly be the culprit?

I had some strange noises as well and it turned out to be a heat shield that was vibrating in the engine compartment. Dealer found it and tightened it up and sound went away.

No, it's not a heat shield 'clanging' noise.
I'll just go to the dealership and drive another one to compare.

Roverman I have this issue with my 05' SE7. Sounds like the exhuast manifold has a blown gasket.

Very noticable when driving with the window down next to jersey barriers. I was going to tell the dealer about this on my next service.

Just had the 15000 mile service and brought this up. They found an exhaust leak at a bad weld by the muffler and replaced from the cat back to the muffler. It sounds much better.

I have the exact same issue (sound). It's in for service and haven't gotten a response from dealer yet. Hope they get it repaired -- I'll mention your remedy to my tech.
