I have what sounds like some kind of air leak coming from the engine bay, it is most noticeable with a colder engine but it can be heard at all engine temps. It goes away when i let off the accelerator and returns when i step on it. I read a post awhile back concerning exhaust header leaks, is this it? 99 D2 with 48500 miles

thanks

If it is, it would not be hard to find. Open up the hood, start the engine and either look for exhaust, or feel for exhaust coming out of the manifolds. You can also look for very dark places on the manifold.

It could also be the donut gasket between the manifold and the "Y" pipe.

Joey, if it is the gasket in the "Y" pipe, what would this typically cost? I think I have the very same problem. I have a ticking noise that increases as I accelerate. I bought my 2000 DII approximately 2 years ago and have kept up with the services, and I change oil and rotate the tires every 5k. Anyway concerning this ticking noise, my mechanic ( Brit, who only works on LR's and Jags, and also performed my 30k service) said something about a bad gasket. I initally thought I had an exhaust leak. Well I needed my rear brakes/rotors replaced and while at a local shop (reputable chain) the mechanic did a complete vehicle inspection and stated that I had a crack in the pipe. Also I must say that this mechanic also has experience working on LR and he says that he has seen this problem too many times. Now what I want to know is who's correct? Could it really be the gasket and not a crack in the pipe. The shop got a price for the part from LR of 1691.00, good thing they'll only charge me 90.00 to do the work ( I'm a regular customer). And my mechanic says that it'll be about 1500.00 to repair what he diagnosed. What gives?

Gasket will cost you about 10 bucks from Atlantic British. If you need a new manifold, go to www.britishrecycling.com and call them to see if they have the used part you are looking for. If they will not ship to where you live, I will get it for you and ship it to you (you pay for the part & the cost to ship of course). They are about an hour away from me. All I will charge you is gas money and a 12 pack of Corona.

This should save you a lot of money!

RoverX - you have deal. Give me time to nail down the problem and I'll get with you offline. Assuming I get the part (gasket or manifold), is this a DIYer or should I just take it to a mechanic? Thanks

Depends on how much you like beer and how mechanical you are! The gasket should be no problem. Manifold might take a few hours. Just be sure to put everything back the way it was otherwise...more codes!!
Tomorrow I am pulling off the Y-pipe and cutting off my old cats and putting on new ones so I will let you know how difficult it is to work under there!! I am also going to replace the water pump myself too. Never done that before but I figure I had better know my Disco well b/c if I break down on the trail, I am the one who will have to fix it!
By the way, Atlantic British has a kit that includes the Y-pipe gaskets and flange bolts for about 40 bucks. Might be worth the extra $ since the bolts tend to come out or break. Also, the exhaust olive (if you need it) is about 10 bucks too.

You know, looking back on your post...90 bucks labor to replace the manifold? Hell, give your mechanic the 90 bucks to do and drink your beer while you watch him.

Over 1500 bucks for a manifold??? Are you serious???

Well I'm not very mechanical, although I can do the basics and I did complete my basement a few years back with very little background, and I love BEER! Like you, I really want to know my Rover (2000) because I plan to keep her for a while. I plan to go back out to my mechanic Monday and nail down the precise problem. Good luck tomorrow.
