Welcome!!!

All LR3's are great off road, but some have a rear locker, and if they have a full size spare tire, then they have the locker.

Otherwise, I'd go for an optioned out SE compared to an HSE, just for the 18" rims, easier to get off road tires for. Get the newest one you can, and try to get a warranty. Land Rovers require a lot of care....so be ready! :)

The '04 Discovery II would be a great first Rover, IMO. They can be had for around $12k (or less depending on mileage) these days.

houm_WA makes a good point, final model year for the DII. I drove a 94 DI since I was 16 and sold it in the process of getting my D3 last year. Wish I had held onto it because I didn't sell for that much. They are great trucks

Anyway, i was in the same position as you. I cruised ebay motors for like 6 months. I tried to get a newer model year (ended up getting 08 HSE). I was willing to sacrifice mileage, as I heard the later model years are more reliable (mine had 92K when I bought), in terms of suspension issues etc. Had a couple inspected with lemonsquad, turns out the main guy used to be a LR mechanic and they provide lots of pictures. The one thing I wish I had waited for was the heavy duty package (rear locker), though as you will learn, good driving can do a lot to make up for not having one.

good luck with your search

With Rovers in general you do not want to buy what is cheap. You will be miles ahead if you buy a rover with really good maintenance history. (This really does apply to the entire lineup). If you are buying private party or 2nd hand lot rather then a dealer I would take it to a dealer or indy shop that specializes in rovers for a pre-purchase inspection. Rovers are high maintenance and not for the faint of heart. Do your research on whatever model you choose and be prepared for higher maintenance costs. (Think $3k+ a year to keep it in top condition especially if your as **** as I when it comes to keeping the rig up) For the 2011 calender year alone I spent 4k on mine and that is doing most of the work myself.
