I have a 2000 Disco2. Its started leaking oil and loosing some water. I took it to the local LandRover garage and they are claiming amongst other things that the problem is the cylinder head gasket. They claim this is a common problem on Discos and will cost $2100 to fix ($2800 with other smaller items).

Is this a common problem?

Is $2100 normal for this?

Sounds like someone is trying real hard to pay for a trip to aruba...

Double that and you can buy a new engine.

Head gaskets are not that expensive and not that hard to change. Find a non-LR mechanic that at least knows engines and explain that this is a 1960's era 215 Buick engine and see if they are capable of doing the work.

Geez this isn't rocket science, but LR garages charge like it is.

That's what I thought. :( Labor here (SF Bay area is high).

Any idea what the book number of person/hours changing the head gasket is?

If you are getting the heads done, plugs replaces and all gaskets (head, valve cover etc.) that is about right. The parts don't cost much, it's the labor. Find out what they are going to do before you say yes. If they are just replacing the gaskets, take your truck and get out of there.

No mention in the quote of plugs, just: head gaskets, timing cover seal, crank seal on one side and value cover seal.

even at $100 a hour for say 7 hours you would only be spending $700 plus gaskets.... an they are not that much.

I would find another mechanic....

For $2800 I would expect new piston/rings, new cam, all new timing chain and gears, new bearings, crank turned heads shaved, I think you get the idea... a very nice rebuid.
