I'm brand new to this forum and am thinking of buying a Land Rover! I've never owned one but have always wanted too! First, what's up with all the electrical issues? I don't want to sell my BMW and then live at the dealership because of problems with the LR.

I'm leaning towards the Range Rover Sport but I'll also look at the L4. I haven't made the trip to the dealership, yet! The closest one is 2 1/2 hours away--another concern.

Can anyone shed some light on what the issues have been? Are the newer models any better or do you just have to live with the quirkiness?

Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forum... Tech questions are best in the specific forum section for that model.

You have a BMW (which owned Land Rover for several years) and yet you worry about issues with the Rover. Last BMW forum I was on I seen the same type of posts over there. I can say this, I have a 1997 Land Rover Discovery with around 15x,*** miles on it. I have owned it for 8 years, it doesn't get driven as my daily driver anymore, but I trust it enough that I could. Sure it has character and minor issues come up, but my 2010 Mini (owned by BMW) has character and minor issues as well. The Mini forums are full of what about this issue or that one. I can say that most of the issues I haven't had on either vehicle, maybe it is luck or maybe it is I try to mechanically keep them in good shape with regular checkups (that I do myself).

Either way if you want a Rover buy it, enjoy it... but with the closest dealer 2+ hours away, make sure you have a good Rover Mechanic near by just in case.

Welcome! I'm a relatively new Land Rover owner, I got a used Discovery 1 (1994) and ended up buying a 2006 LR3 from the local Jaguar/Land Rover dealership. When a was on the test drive I asked the salesman (Warning this info comes from a salesman!!)
I asked him specifically about the reliability (or lack thereof) reputation of Land Rovers. He told me this reputation originates from Land Rover when it was owned by the British Government. Quality Control went down the tubes at that time, the BMW/Ford came into the picture at this time QC became a priority. Today's Land Rover (Ta Ta Motors owned) is dedicated to quality as well.
This doesn't mean you won't have problems, but the reality is these vehicles (2005 and newer) are reliable solid vehicles.

Just be aware they are gas guzzlers.

BUT the ride is great, comfort is king.

My 1994 D1 is also very reliable, however it has been stripped down to minimum luxury, I would not call my D1 a luxury vehicle anymore. I use it as my Wheeler/camping truck for that it excels!

My advise would be to continue doing what you're doing, figure out which vehicle you want to buy, research the problems (on these type of forums) associated with the LR of your choice. Most issues on newer vehicles I've seen are typically easily solved, are covered by a recall (LR typically charges you nothing to perform a recall repair) or are simply perceived "problems" by the end user.

I hope you find what you are looking for, Land Rovers are awesome vehicles!!
