O2 sensors gone at 23k miles?

can this be possible? I've had my 2003 SE7 for about 2 months now. Had engine light on when i bought it but ran great. I was dreading the codes from all the horror discovery stories...but i finally sucked it up and bought a ODB as it sounds like this is a 'must have' if you own a disco (should include one when you buy a disco!).

anyway, i'm getting 1100, 0135 and 0155....great, MAF and O2 sensors. I'm aware the MAF blows on discoverys so I can get by that...but the O2 codes throw me....O2 circuit malfunction? I know it takes 10 minutes to toss in new sensors and they aren't expensive...but can this really be the problem? O2s junk after 23k miles?

My disco runs smoothly and performs wonderfully..although gas mileage does appear to be suffering, 10 or slightly less MPG, (which i guess only reaffirms that fact that the O2s are gone).

thought comments? much appreciated!

If you want, try cleaning the MAF with some electrical contact cleaner. This might stop it from throwing a code. The O2 sensors seem like they are fairly easy enough to get to, especially the one under the pass. side. Code reader should tell you which O2 sensor is giving a bad reading, I've heard of people cleaning them -- since your truck has less than 30k that may work for you. Yeah, wierd that they are throwing a code @ your mileage... maybe another member has some thoughts on that. I know that mine has over 76k and I haven't had an 02 sensor fault (knock on wood) yet :p

P0135 Generic O2 Heater Circuit (Bank 1, Sensor 1)
P0155 Generic O2 Heater Circuit (Bank 2, Sensor 1)

So it looks like you've got some bad o2 sensors- now you know where to look for em. Your truck could have 3 or 4 sensors, bank one is the side with #1 cylinder, both banks have primary oxygen sensors (before catalytic converter). Depending on exhaust options you may have 1 or 2 sensors behind the catalytic converter (secondary).

http://www.iequus.com/obd_def.asp OBD II code lookup (sometimes shows you a little more than the reader after you have your code)

http://www.troublecodes.net/landrvr/ another good LR link

or because your code is a circuit failure, you might not have power going to that circuit....bad fuse? wires? The truck has so low of a mileage...

thanks for the reply...hopefully its no all a bad oman.

luckily I have a independent Rover-only tech/fabrication shop only 5 miles from my house. which is also a big reason I was more comfortable making the jump into a discovery, dispite well-known issues with the truck. (http://www.oerltd.com if anyone has run across them) I'll probably just replace the sensors myself and see what happens. If no good results, i'll take it to the tech...i should build a relationship anyway with him...hopefully i'll be taking my disco to him to install lockers soon!!!

thanks again...i just hope my money goes to more mods than BS repairs..fingers crossed!!! at least its the first time i can get under my truck with a wrench which i'm looking forward to, so I guess i can look at that bright side.

Awesome that you have a independent shop so close, I wonder where all the independent LR shops in California are -- I hate paying dealer prices.

(edit) did find one in Sacramento - http://www.stewartsauto.com

yeah, that pretty much sealed the deal for me. i'm somewhat mechanically inclined and enjoy working with trucks, but all the electrical and BS problems with Rovers i would have never bought one knowing the dealer was the only place for help. Apparently this shop does a lot of custom fabrication for rovers as well...every good to know. I'm sure he'll save my **** more than once.

Are you still under warrenty??? Mine is and it is covered by LR ... at least in Canada. Let them pay for the repairs!!!

so i emailed my local rover service dept to schedule a service visit. and I give him the codes i was getting and asked if the warranty would cover that...he responds

"I was wondering why/how you would retrieve codes for the CEL?
The standard Rover warranty is 4yrs- 50,000 miles. The repair should be covered."

Why? well maybe so you don't do some needless non-warranty work to charge me for. God i hate dealers. there is absolutely nothing i hate more than that "people don't buy expensive cars and hope for cheap oil changes" attitude.

I'll bet it's just the MAFS, but since it's under warranty, no worries. To the other guy in Sacramento, Stewarts is outstanding.

Finally brought her in for service. the tech found remains of a small mouse nest behind then engine and thinks they my have damaged a wire. However he could find any damage in any of the wire housing from O2s to computer and MAF. the probelm is that the wire harness runs under the intake manifold. he estimates about $800 of non-warranty work. I told him to forget about it and luckily he didn't charge me for the diagnostic work. did some of my own poking around and everything looks perfect. I might use this to try that independent tech nearby. we'll see.
