Been getting a growing oil leak around the oil pan. Is there a gasket for the engine sump or would I be OK using The Right Stuff gasket maker?

Can the pan be removed easily to remove the old gasket? (will the axel or oil pump prevent me from removing pan?)

Thanks,
Neill

Hi Neil:

Yes there is a gasket for the engine sump / oil pan gasket available through British pacific for around $ 7.00

For the 96 disco’s all they have available is the cork gaskets. On the 04 disco 2 they use a neoprene / rubberized one.

I’ve never been too fond of the “ right stuff “ I use ultra black or ultra grey silicone by Permatex. Make sure the 2 mating surfaces are lacquer thinner clean otherwise the silicone will not adhere to the surfaces, and a leak will result.

There’s plenty of room to remove the oil pan. Drop it straight down as to not bend the oil pick up tube.

Good luck……… Chongo

After more study it appears I am loosing the oil from the valve covers.
How intense is a job like this for a limited experience, back yard mechanic with no lift?

On my o4 they were 8 mm, but they could be torx head fasteners for the valve covers. You can get a set of these at most any part stores. They’re easy to do but the plenum and air injection comes off in the Dicso 2’s. I used just the rubberized gasket and nothing else, and it works well.

Good luck……… Chongo

Before you go yanking the covers apart try just tightening them down first, I know souds too simple. I had to do that every so often and it stops it right away. If that fixes the problem, pull the bolts out and dip the threads in pipe dope and reinstall, that adds a buffer and they are less likely to vibrate loose. I haven't had a problem since I have done that. GL
