i just put in two new u joints and when i took it for a test drive
after some vibration it broke off part of one of the new joints.

i watched the tech do the work, seamed like it went smooth
he said the new joints went in fine.

I’ve never personally seen it, but I’ve heard of it. When installed incorrectly this is the end result. Something wasn’t correct when it was installed.
If the driveline is salvageable, the whole process needs to be repeated correctly plus balancing. If the Land Rover tech did the work, it should be fixed on them.
I’m sorry to hear this but it sounds like it is the tech’s responsibility at this point.

As a sincere question and a precautionary Check only, Is there a chance the unit is in 4x4 lock ? weather by mistake or inadvertently ? Were the u joints installed by use of a hammer ?

Best wishes, Good luck………. Chongo

That has to make you feel a little exasperated....I sincerely hope it didn't grenade anything else.

There isn't much that can be done wrong. That said, the installer just has to make sure the caps are seated correctly and the u-bolts are cinched down correctly. Did the mechanic pump grease into the grease fittings when he was done? Did he mark the shaft's relationship to the yokes before he removed it, so that he could put it back in the same way?
