I noticed this was posted in a UK D3 forum so I thought I would ask here as well since I experience this when off pavement. Anyone else ? I took my LR3 in for service and they gave me an 06' that I noticed did not do it nor did it have the slight play my truck has in the wheel. I asked the tech that had worked on my truck if that was something he had noticed from the 05's to the 06's. He said he could even feel it while we were sitting in my truck. He then started the "well the boss may try to say it is from those big Terra Grapplers you have on here". Give it a rest because that UK site has a TSB number on this. TSB LA211-002 Guess I will be visiting my dealer on this one with the TSB in hand.

I had play in my 05 HSE steering and they finally replaced the steering column which cured the problem.

Do you have a link to the site with the TSB's? That could be very helpful.

AdvRide, could you please tell us what has been the outcome and if the dealer took care of the knock. I have exact same problem and only on rought surfaces, but I dont notice any extra play in the steering. Have taken the car twice to the dealer but they were not able to re-produce the problem.

Unbelievable. Up until now, I have used loaners for total of three times. First two times HSEs and now the third time its a v6. Every one of these loaners has had steering knock present while going over bumps, and much more then what I have in my HSE. The only time I didn't notice this knock was when I rented an SE which I kept for a two three days, right before I purchased mine. Is this like a known or commnan issue with the vehicle?

Houm, I kid you not. I can recreate it on certain bumps, easily. Its sounds like something is loose inside the steering system (linkage or something). God, I remember going thru this for my 95 montero (the original bigger one). And it took em a while to get that one sorted out. It happens on sudden sharp change of surface, like going over a small and sharp edged potholes etc. Basically, whenever the steering is thrown off quick enough in different directions by the rough surface, like a dirt road with samll rock scattered around.

Steering Column bumps

I had it happen once on my 05 LR3 SE7. Hit a pothole heading into Brooklyn, NY.

Very loud noise and stung my hands. Turns out it shattered a disk inside the column that controls the horn. The next day, the horn began to sound and would not be silenced until the horn died.

LR fixed it free of charge (although they did say: "we can't prove you did this, so we won't charge you," which i thought was kind of funny).

Since then, I have studiously avoided potholes at high speeds.

the knock that i am talking about, doesn't need high speeds. it usually occurs at low to very low speeds. My vin does not fall into the range mentioned in the service bulletin posted on the uk site but i do have the knock.

Amir, interesting...my last car was a Montero, too !! 1997 LS....it was a nice LS, with the bigger motor and everything, but it was no SR. I loved that ride and put over 200K miles on it. That thing was very trustworthy and reliable. ...and pretty darn capable, too.

Anyway, the only thing I'm trying to say, Amir, is that something like a knock or noise or whatever, is subjective....so what you observe as a problem, might be totally normal to someone else. There may be no problem at all. I know that there was one LR3 that didn't exhibit that behavior, but maybe it's something subtle and both behaviors are fine.
