Tailgate interior corrosion question

Apologies for re-hashing an old topic but I was told that the reason for my tailgate latch failure was corrosion on the internal latch mechanism. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so is there anything I can do to prevent water ingress? Thanks in advance.
