It is so sad to see this forum slowly die. It was a great place to come share information and get information. Now it is just filled with 2-3 people fighting in public and it is getting to a point where you cannot post any question without threads getting hijacked.

Dear Moderator,
Please take a more active role so that you don't lose all your contributing members.

Thanks so much!

I'm sorry to see it as well. I really thought I would miss being able to share in the joy of LR4 ownership after I traded my truck off. This place was one of my favorite haunts, now I basically go days without even thinking about it.

It still seems like a great place if you have an LR3 or RR, but the LR4 forum has turned toxic.

Good luck to everyone. I hope that it gets cleaned up.

You can add specific members of this forum to your ignore list and that way you'll never see their posts. If you're unsure of how to do this follow these steps.

(1) Make sure you're logged in
(2) Click "User CP"... first link under the Forums tab
(3) Click "Buddy / Ignore Lists" on the left side of the site under Miscellaneous
(4) Type the username of the person you wish to ignore in the Ignore List text field
(5) Click Save List

From this point on, instead of seeing their post you'll see "This message is hidden because username is on your ignore list."

Hello festus,
I didn't know you could do that! Thanks for the info.
But, this still doesn't solve the problem that many threads are getting hijacked...

This forum is pathetic now. I understand there ought to be some kidding around, occasional temper tantrums etc.

But now its nothing but endless trolling and insults that go well beyond any sense of decorum and taste: something one might expect on a Dodge Neon board.

There's absolutely no moderator presence either.

I am outta here

If people would actually go out on adventures, explore some new terrain, push their vehicles and themselves beyond what is comfortable, get well off the beaten path and actually post up some trip reports, things may just perk up again??

It's the same old "which tire is best?", "I have a suspension fault...", "which clay bar is best?", "which lift is best?"...who cares about any of that if you guys don't get out there and hit some trails! Why even be part of a forum if all you want to know is - will 22's fit my LR4? Christ, there's even MUD at the top of this page behind the Rover World Organization banner!!!

I blame everyone here who only uses 20% of what their vehicle was built for. That's why this forum is dying. Not people taking pop shots at one another. Get out there. Plan an expedition and GET LOST! How else do you expect anyone to care about what goes on around here? It's BORING here!

Feel free to add me to your collective Ignore List

Well, it's an interesting issue you've brought up. Today's Land Rovers have a lot of charisma, to be sure. Some of that is owed to Land Rover's past. I have a Defender 90. It differs drastically from the LR4. It cost around $35k. It was unsophisticated, even new, and compared to the LR4 it is absolutely barbaric. Flat glass all around. Sheet metal spot welds are unapologetically visible everywhere. Hand crank windows. The seats slide on simple tracks. No leather. No wood. It's old school to be sure. What it lacks in luxury, however, it makes up in utility and capability. It has 16" wheels and coil springs over solid axles. It has a center locking diff that I can engage when I feel like it. In an hour and a half I can lift it 3 inches, fit real 35" off-road tires on it, and tackle obstacles that the LR4 couldn't hope to get past.

Since my D90 was built, the Land Rover marque has evolved away from utility and towards luxury. Price and complexity have risen, and as we all know, complexity is the enemy of reliability. Don't get me wrong. Land Rover had reliability issues back when my Defender was built, but in a way that's different from today. The Defender (and the first generation Discovery) were well-designed trucks that were indifferently built. The first owner would encounter problems owing to whichever manufacturing defects applied to his particular specimen, but once those were sorted out, the vehicle was more or less reliable. My 90 is fourteen years old and it's my (almost) daily driver. The LR4 is a different animal. The terrain response system is a marvel. It lets someone who has no idea how to drive off road drive off road. Same with HDC and all the other ****-bang enhancements. But it is so complicated that the opportunity for an expedition-halting failure is huge. My LR4 recently had an electrical problem that took 5 weeks to diagnose and involved bringing in a technical specialist from another state. I will go places in my Defender that I wouldn't dream of going in the LR4, because I have so much more confidence that the Defender will bring me back. Because of its complexity and the attendant lack of reliability, my LR4 might see a few snow covered roads or fire roads, but it will never get too far off the beaten path, never out of the cell phone coverage area, and never beyond reach of a tow truck.

Then there's the cost factor. Back when Defenders were available new here in the U.S., they were a posh option to a Jeep Wrangler. Land Rover didn't compete with BMW and Mercedes like they do today. You have to have a LOT of money before it makes sense to risk wheeling a $60,000 vehicle. I remember when the LR3 came out. Not too many folks wheeled them at first. It was only after a few years had passed, when the trucks were on their 2nd or 3rd owners, and their values had dropped substantially, that people began to wheel them more. And the same will be true with the LR4, I'm sure.

And so I feel, sir, that your angst is misplaced. The LR4 is too new and too valuable to be seeing very many threads of trip reports and photos of trail rash.

YMMV.

The last I heard, this is still a "Technical Discussion" forum for the LR4. So why is this blackforestham guy whining about redundant topics about tires, suspensions, and that same old crap? He's in the wrong forum, and he wonders why he's bored?

Hi guys,

Blackforestham has a vested interest in this community, and I'm sure he was only trying to steer the topic back to where we would like it all to be; talking about fun and personalization of our rigs for thier intended purpose. Maybe the words chosen are a bit harsh, but I 100% believe it was not meant to provoke any one other than to go out and enjoy thier trucks.

Blackforestham supplies a very valuable offroad component to us, he is the maker of the Sasquatch lift. I am fairly sure that this lift predates the Johnson rod lift which works on the same principle. Maybe his comments look differently to me since I already possesed that information.

With all that said, CaptainSpaulding's post should be read and applauded. He has a very unige insight to Land Rover ownership that many of us will never posses. His points are extreemly valid at this point. Of the 20% of new Rovers that will ever venture off the paved road, even less will see anything other than a muddy feild, sandy beach or fire road. That of course changes as time passes, and he spelled it out very well for us.
