I would be careful as well, as I just went through almost an identical scenario.

I even swapped the alternator and still died a half day later. Looks to me now like a bad ground, as I managed to get it home 'ok' with a jumper cable attached to the chassis.

Crazy thing was it worked just fine for a half day with a new alt.

Update - he fortunately made it home with the new battery. Had it at the shop today and it was the alternator. They change this and the drive belts. Thanks gents!
