I don’t do Facebook either. WhatsApp only requires your cell phone number to create an account. All communications are encrypted end to end. Hope this helps. Dean

You do give Meta data about your usage of the app, including location (either precise because you gave them permission, or approximate based on the network you're on and/or your IP address), along with device information. It all goes towards building your profile so they can more effectively sell ads. Some people don't care about this, I do.
