I'm curious to know if it's possible to stand on the glass roof?

How much weight can it withstand? I know that with roof rails and cross bars, the rack can hold approx. 150 lbs. but that is with movement. I weigh 200 lbs. and without a roof rack, I'd like to stand up top to shoot photos and check out the scenery whenever possible.

Will too much weight concentrated in one area cause any issues to the sealant around the glass roof or other structural problems?

I've looked into the full roof racks but I typically carry a Thule cargo box, a 9.4' long board, and 2 bikes... so a full rack won't exactly work for me.

What do you think? Thanks.

I would be very hesitant. The problem is that when you stand or kneel on something, your two hundred points is concentrated to a point load, and you are standing on glass.....laminated glass sure, but it's glass all the same.

I stand on the roof rails ( when loading stuff on my Yakima rack or basket) and have had no problems- I weigh 160. I'd never stand on the sheet metal or the glass.

Be very careful. I broke mine last summer, even though I was just crawling around up there with a cargo bag. My knee went down and I put a little too much pressure on it and it cracked the outer sandwich of the glass. It cost about $1,200 to replace.

I was considering buying a roof top tent + a Hannibal rack. Is the general consensus that this is a bad idea?

It should be okay. I have a friend with an LR3 and he did exactly that. He and his wife camped up there okay. I lost all those photos in a computer mishap after Rover Rondezvous, so I can't show you unfortunately.

What this converstation is about is standing on the glass directly, without a roof rack.

Thanks for the responses. I figured that the glass was not strong enough to stand on directly. However, if a rack is mounted to the roof rails, including a Hannibal tent, then it is perfectly safe.

What is the weight capacity up there? I thought I read that the LR rack is good for 119lbs (Per the LR website). Is this because of rack design or is that the max that the roof rails themselves (which the rack bolts to) can hold?

I believe it's just the lawyers capacity as more weight up there while under way would make it 'dangerous'.

This, and they will also be concerned about driving with weight up there - you'd be raising the center of gravity pretty significantly with a large weight up there. If you will just be sleeping up there, I would think it would be able to hold quite a bit of weight (since it is well distributed).
