Quoted today here in Socal. Is it just me or this is just plain ridiculous! Never I have been quoted this much for an oil change. Last oil change was $232 and change, dealer says that was a mistake on their part.

I remember oil change was anywhere from $80 to $140 for my LR3, then LR4 was like $185. But what I was quoted today is simply wrong.

I thanked them and passed. Will try another dealer.

Hopefully that price includes a heaping handful of Vaseline, or do they expect you to supply your own before you unzip and bend over in front of the burly foreman? Dealers are only good for warranty and recall work. Lots of good indy shops around SoCal to go to, or DIY. Oil changes are super quick and easy with these cars, almost a fun way to spend 30 minutes in your garage actually.

Outrageous. Oi+Filter is about $130 in parts. It's all of 15 minutes of labor. I understand there are other costs, but $250 for 15 minutes of labor?

I'm telling you, basic service and brakes are the biggest rip-off.

$320 is really high for that - I recently paid $230 in NY for an oil change. Maybe they are including extra time/cost to reset your service reminder? My dealer wouldn't reset it unless I paid them an extra $70 for the labor to reset the service reminder, even though the remainder of the annual service was done by a combination of me (filters) and them (complimentary check of the car). I assume that $70 of labor is really something that takes about 3 minutes...

Now I see the service reminder each time I turn the car on, and it serves as a reminder to take the car to a local shop from now on (I have a good local indy shop that is fine with me bringing in the parts (brakes, oil, etc) and will just charge me the actual labor.

I had a coupon for a $90 oil change from a local Northern VA LR dealer. Armed w/knowledge from this forum, this sounded like a deal even compared to a DIY job. I also had a couple of minor warranty items to tend to so in I went.

Of course, once I got there I was informed that the coupon didn't cover synthetic oil which is all they put in LR4s (then why the coupon?). I was there anyway, and deciding that my time was worth something I had them proceed...total cost just under $200.

Next stop, Amazon Prime for that oil extractor and related shop gear (and a Jag oil filter at half the price of the identical LR filter-- another hat tip to the forum!). Looks like about a 3-beer job; thanks guys.

That quote you were given, was it for LOF and or did it include a certain mileage service?
You might want to consider doing some of your own work and save a bundle.
By the way, how many miles on your truck at this time, when did you have your last factory recommended service done?

A somewhat related note. My service guy is adamant that I not do an oil change until the free one I get at 15K (or one year - I'm almost to 10K so it definitely won't make one year!). He said that the factory engineers really want the engine to break in (OK, he didn't say "break in" but it was something akin to that in more words) and that the best way to do the process is to let it go the full 15K. That is new to me. Of course the first change is free for me. I asked if I could pay him the normal rates to do one earlier and he said he really does not want to do it. So I'll wait - especially given that most of those miles are steady, interstate driving. He said that after that initial period of 15K he would be good with me changing more frequently whether it be them or us. Of course this is only for new vehicles. But it was something I hadn't heard before.

Just yesterday, Des Moines, Iowa LR dealer. $215 all in for oil change, checked diff fluids, replaced driver side mirror, did whole vehicle software update. Checked all the usual things, brakes, etc.

I know its a bit pricey, but I think the service and techs at this dealer are great and love a modified LR4, so they were especially helpful and I have a certain piece of mind having it done there.

I had mine changed at about 3k and then again at close to 15k, and just yesterday at 23k. I have been towing a lot this summer and wanted to get it done along with a few minor things.

15k still sounds insane to me, but it is 8 liters of oil I guess. 15k on the first change is just nuts. a few thousand miles is plenty of time to seat the rings and get any initial wear on the engine. I don't see how you could hurt an engine with fresh oil, just doesn't make sense. Worst case you prolong the break in process, but I rarely go over 3k rpm anyway (just under engine braking I think).

I saw in another thread that you had your software updated. What needed to be updated? (Sorry, I can't remember what model you have.)

Also, that looks like a pretty decent price if you also had the driver side mirror replaced (though that may have been under warranty?)

My dealer has a special going this Summer for a free multi-point inspection. So after my 6K mile road trip I had them do it. They topped off all the fluids and checked everything out. The only thing they pointed out was a bit of a rub on the gas tank "skid plate" - and that was just for fun. So the whole things was free.

I suspect there are big variances in dealer service departments. And maybe out their in CA where the cost of living is so much higher than in Des Moines they figure they can get away with it - or need it to feed the kids.
