Pretty amazing first posts. Curious what the thought is on the spare tire... it is smaller diameter than the 265/65's right? Might be better to have another KO2?

I am curious what the budget was and what the final weight is. I have another Finlayforprez clone (white 2013 with compos, sliders, ladder, rack, etc).. but I stopped short of the bumpers and some other things due to cost and weight (and honestly I haven't done any trips that really require all that stuff.)

Hey Mike,

I'll let Chris comment on his thoughts, but I left my stock 19" black design package full spare under my LR4 more as protection and an absolute just in case. I never plan to actually use it as a spare since I have the real spare. If you wanted to get a 6th Compomotive and tire, you could air it down completely and stow it under there, but from my experience, in any warm climate off road it's so annoying to remove from underneath. If I needed a second full-sized spare, I'd throw it up on the roof.

I am also curious if Chris as a build price and weight, as I never kept track myself.

Very nice. Don't worry about the compressor being exposed to water as a result of installing the Tactical sliders, it was designed to take that type of abuse. The cover you removed is strictly for muffling noise anyway, it's not waterproof or anything like that. I like that they enlarged that drain hole under the compressor "pan", that's always been a problem with my early version of the slider. Dirt and sand will accumulate inside that pan when driving in the desert, until eventually the compressor will make contact and become very noisy... Have had to either lower the slider to clean it or force water from the back of the slider into the pan to dislodge the build-up. You should not have that problem anymore.

Thanks for the feedback on this. This is reassuring to say the least. You can tell the compressor is quite a bit louder now without the cover on it.

On the spare tire @Finlayforprez nailed it on the head. There's no way to stick a new 18" wheel and tire underneath without airing down nor do I really need to have 2 complete spares. I had the 19" laying around where it made sense to throw it back underneath for the added protection.

For costs I kind of stopped counting there as it got a little out of hand with all the extra little bits and pieces here and there. I'll try to sit down though and put something together for everyone. Weight though I'm not sure but overall it's not that bad.

Nice build.. why did you choose ARB over the Tactical front bumpers?

I was sold on the ARB long before I came across the Tactical Bumper. I believe the Tactical gives you better angles for off road but for my use the ARB will be more than enough. The fit and finish is top notch and looks like it just fits the truck but then I'm impressed with the Tactical items as well. What I like about the ARB is that you don't have to relocate the water reservoir which makes things easier as there really is not a lot of real estate when adding lights, fogs, parking sensors, winch and so forth. Only downfall of the ARB was the instructions and the wheel flare cut outs. Also is a bit pricey when you add everything else that is required (winch install kit, relocation kit for winch, fog light kit, wiring loom for fog lights).

At the end of the day you can't go wrong with either.

One of the items I wanted to do was blackout of the raised portion of the hood. There are a few people out there that have created these; however, they do not cover the sides of the raised portion on the hood. I asked if they would change this and got a why would you do this as we've never had this request before? Back to the drawing board on doing this on my own. As I was doing the plasti-dip I thought I could give this a go for the hood as well which leads me to today and my Saturday afternoon project.

Hard part for this is masking off the lines and getting a good curve towards the front of the hood. For me I took normal blue tape and cut it in half to be able to bend the tape easier on the curves as you see below:

Once this was done I then began to mask off the truck. Key is to open the hood and mask underneath the the hood near the edges and along the engine bay near the wipers to give you a good clean mask.

Here's the truck fully masked off using drop cloth and newspaper ready for the first coat.

First coat applied. Key is not to overdue it on the first coat.

And finished product...few coats later.

In summary it's still a little early to tell as it needs to properly dry. It was hard to get a good even coat on such a large surface. I was standing on a ice chest on the front trying to cover the entire area but also standing on the sides to change up the direction of the strokes. I'm just glad I was able to get a good clean break on the lines when I removed all the tape. Overall though really pleased with the look and anxious to see how it holds up.

I'll let it cure for a bit then take it out for some better photos to share.

Bravo—awesome documentation and progress on this beast! Can't wait to see you put it through its paces and take it to its limits (with pics ;)).

In regard to weight, may the Land Rover gods bless your poor bushings and compressor with everlasting life!

I'm not sure but overall it's not that bad.

:D Denial is a perfectly acceptable solution to the problem I suppose. (no hate intended here). Even stock I think these things are 'heavy'... so ya. Just curious where you ended up on a scale. I mostly ask because as I said, I am not far off from your build other than the bumpers and winch. I have most of the rest (my sliders don't protect as much so they are lighter).

Weight is a huge issue for me. Luckily LR4 has fantastic payload and tow ratings, so I can stay within spec. Add all my camp ('overland') gear and its pretty serious. Add in some good load rated tires and I am mostly not concerned, but suspension and overall performance are impacted. I can tell just by having my sliders off for rust fix up and driving around a bit. Same with the tire change between winter/summer wheel/tire setups.

I am also interested because of safety honestly. I am a bit of a safety and spec nut. I run the cargo barrier (dog cage) for safety reasons also. Have tie downs for cooler/fridge and everything else in the cabin. Weight on the rack, the bumpers, the tires, the suspension... it matters.

This is my current setup leaving the dump... empty cargo and just myself in the LR4.
