Hi Everyone,

I inherited a very nice 2010 LR4 HSE over a year ago. The only thing is it was high mileage. The body and interior are in excellent condition, it has upgraded wheels and an upgraded exhaust system. I absolutely LOVE this car, however, it has almost 230,000 miles on it.

I am noticing a tick in the lifter that is getting worse and the transmission ,while still working fine is showing some signs of not functioning like it did last year. It's not bad but something I am noticing, almost like a "sticking" when you take off and the rev of things.

Here is my problem - I love this car, I am afraid repairing it will be more than the car is worth.

Do you have any ideas what I should do? Will this body style go up in value over time and therefore justify the repairs? Should I trade it in or sell it while it's still running? Do you think a European repair shop or salvage yard would be interested in purchasing it for parts? I know the seats, exhaust and wheels alone are worth a bit not counting all of the other good parts on it.

Just trying to weigh out my options as a single mom...

TIA

Its a niche vehicle with a cult following.
Prices are going up, to people who like these cars. And honestly, no one really goes looking for these, unless they already know about them.

You should get an estimate for repairs.
Transmission could be as simple as a filter and fluid change.

Engine tick could be a slew of things, first that comes to mind is timing chain slap due to guides...expect a few thousand $$.

If and when the time comes for me to do major engine repairs, my cutoff will be half the kbb value. That said, I've already invested a few thousand on repairs and preventative maitnance.

If you may need a suspension refresh and LCA replacement, or other "minor" repairs in addition to the major engine work...it may be time to send it on its way.

Keep in kind though, there are not many cars like it. Land cruiser and G wagon are really its only competition. And good luck trying to get either of those for a reasonable price.

What he said. In addition I’d go to an independent Land Rover specialist and pay for a complete inspection to get a handle on what’s wrong and go from there.

the bottom line is that the car has done almost a 1/4 million miles so there’s a good chance you may send it on down the line.
On a side note if you really like the LR4 then you could hunt one down that has had all of the work already done and not be too out of pocket.

Thank you for replying!

I keep going back to the fact that there aren't many cars like it and I am surprised how many times when I am out someone driving a new convertible BMW will ask what kind of car that is and how old is it. I am not very fond of the newer body styles because they look like everything else out there on the road. So for that reason, I can't help but wonder if in another 10 years, pending it stays maintained and in good shape, will it be worth a bit more? Obviously the mileage on this one is a big strike against it, but really its in very good condition. The leather is in excellent shape along with the dash and other interior elements.

I am going to get another opinion here locally... I am hoping you could be right about the tranny with filter and fluid change. It shifts just fine so I know whatever is going on is just beginning.

True - I have thought about trying to find another one and change out the wheels and exhaust then sell mine lol.

I finally figured out how to put a pic up - This was taken last week when I got a Christmas tree.. As you can see for a 1/4 of a million miles, she still has some game!

Get an honest opinion on the issues but frankly at that mileage I would just drive it until something goes bad. If the engine or transmission crap out the cost to fix is likely worth more than the car and unless you like to hobby rebuild or part out then more of a PITA than anything. This was found money, enjoy it and don't worry too much about it. The only thing going in favour is this is a somewhat unique SUV. If this was a big Jag sedan with that mileage then the value would be worth nothing. The marketplace is full of pristine high end Euro cars that look great but were ultimately put out of service by astronomical repair costs on a the engine/transmission/suspension. Fancy paperweights.

As a general rule aftermarket parts don't bring extra money or at the very most pennies on the dollar. The exhaust system may actually work against you lol.

Wow she's a beauty! I hope that you can keep her on the road as long as possible, and if you run her into the ground and decide to part out let us know!

2011 LR4 HSE lux 188000 highway miles. I plan on keeping this truck forever no matter the cost. Its perfect for me. Its cheaper than buying another truck of any variety. If LR makes this model with electrics then maybe.
