Hi good folks. Longtime reader, first time poster and all of that...
I've had a '14 LR4 going on a year now. Maintenance wise, all I've done is change the oil so far (most recently, about 2 months and 2k miles ago). And for reference, I'm at about 83k on the clock total.
When starting up my LR4, it has always seemed to rev up to around the 1.2-1.6k mark for 10-20 seconds, before dropping back down and idling around the 800 rpm range.
Today when I started it up, the revs kept climbing. I curiously watched as they neared 3k for no apparent reason. Then the throttle (which I wasn't touching at all at this point) got jittery, randomly jumping and falling 100-200 rpms within that 3k range. I gave it some gas to see if that would settle it down, but no. So foot off the gas and onto the brake, and I switched it into reverse. That resulted in the engine instantly dropping back down to its normal idle (800ish).
As I was driving I noticed in my cluster (about 5 minutes later) the solid check engine light. I didn't hear any audible tone, and it wasn't on when I pulled out of the driveway - so not sure when the CEL actually came on. I've had 3 subsequent starts since the initial incident. One was normal, and two were of the unusually "revvy" and jittery sort. Switching into R, N, or D instantly settles the engine idle to normal. The CEL has constantly remained on since I first noticed it.
I had been meaning to buy the IIDTool for a while now, so I just went ahead and ordered it today.
Based on many test drives and reading I did prior to purchase, I know these engines are naturally a bit noisy. But now I'm second guessing if my engine "sounds" okay. So I took a quick video of what my engine currently sounds like when it's at normal idle hoping one of you awesome people with far more knowledge and expertise than myself could give your input.
There is definitely a bit of a rhythmic "tocking" that is maybe a bit more noticeable in person than in the video. Not sure where it's coming from, so I tried to film from a few angles.
So my main two questions for anyone who made it this far are: (1) Does this seem okay to drive until my IIDTool arrives and I can get better info, and (2) Any idea what's actually wrong?
Any advice is much appreciate, thanks in advance!
