So I ran it empty today. 90% highway and 10% local for last tank. I had a lead foot, and drives 75 80 mph on the freeway..I was able to get 320 miles...

This is not a scientific research but only a sample..

Okay, so I did another roundtrip running the 2013 LR4 to nearly empty.

It was mostly highway traffic, averaging 70+ mph.

This is what I got:

342.9 miles total on my Trip A - I ran for 35 miles with the computer reading "0 miles to empty". The computer also indicated 17.4 AVG miles per gallon.

I filled up the tank, adding 21.296 miles. If I do the math, 342.9 miles / 21.296 gallons, I get about 16 mpg.
--So at 16 mpg X 23 gallon tank - I estimate the total miles could be around 368. So I could have gotten around 20+ more miles.

Here's a quick chart I may use to estimate distance left , even when "0 miles to empty" is indicated:

If AVG MPG is 13, then 23 gallon tank X 13mpg = around 299 miles
AVG MPG 14, then 23 X 14 = 322 miles
AVG MPG 15, then 23 X 15 = 345 miles
AVG MPG 16, then 23 X 16 = 368 miles
AVG MPG 17, then 23 X 17 = 391 miles

These are most like the very "best" case. Things such as climate, road conditions, traffic-stop/go, wind, tides; will all have an affect on actual milage attained.

Take this with caution, as the manual indicates that running out of gas is not good for your engine, so heed the advice of your LR4 computer.

sparrky,
Please explain your logic (or state of mind) in driving your car for 35 miles with DTE reading Zero! :)
Ballsy....I appreciate the data, but I am not sure I would have done that...I guess it depends on where you are. Many years ago, I ran out of gas just as I was approaching the top of an overpass. Luckily it was in an RX7 so I could push it the 10 ft or so and then it was downhill...Haven't pushed the range on a car since....

No s**t! I ran out of gas 3 times with my 2006 RRS for trusting (or not trusting, I guess) that stupid on-board computer. Not fun, fortunately I didn't have to push and am a AAA member, so a phone call and 45-60 minutes of wasted time fixed it... Whenever that thing approaches 0 miles to empty, I start sweating profusely.

I think the computer is estimating a worst case level of MPG in indicating the number of miles left before empty.

For example, after my trip yesterday, I fill up the tank. The computer was telling me I have 319 miles before empty. That's around 14MPG (13.86). So I think its estimating a worst case to prevent running out of gas.

If it is telling me I only should get 319 miles on a tank of gas, but on the other hand its telling me I'm getting 16 AVG MPG, I really should get 368 total miles (23gal X 16mpg), if I drive and attain similar MPG for the duration of the tank of gas.

I'm not saying I'm going to push it to the limit and hope to never run out. I'm just saying it may be prematurely telling you fill up, when you might have 20, 30, 40 or more miles before you're really empty.

Again, take my non-scientific calcs with a grain of salt and heed the advice of the computer as LR knows more than me, I've only had an LR for two months.

My 2006 RRS definitely seems to be less "forgiving" (which is why I started this thread, being used to it for 7 years I was absolutely convinced the fuel tank of the LR4 had to be smaller), when the Sport says 0 miles to empty it usually means it, you are living dangerously without filling up right away. As a result, the range from a fill-up is usually more optimistic than the LR4.

In fact, on one occasion I ran out of gas with the range showing 10 miles left, just by driving uphill a bit. Now that I have more or less figured out the different "metrics" of the LR4, I kind of agree that there appears to be still quite a bit of juice in the tank of mine when the range displayed goes down to zero... But I still fill up before I get there, I learned the hard way that these fancy digital gauges and trip computers are not an exact science.

I filled my tank ONCE with 22 gallons and not by choice. The way I see it, I need to fill the sucker up no matter what so why take the risk of running out of gas and sucking in whatever crap is in the bottom of my tank. But I do appreciate adventurous people who will take chances. Yep, my wife is right, I am just BORING!

Does anyone know anything about extended fuel tanks? Where do they put them?
