David, your truck looks great.
Is there a reason (besides $) why you didn't go to 18"?
I'm wondering if 19" is good enough for the type of off-road I want to do (Im not really planning on doing any rock crawling) and knowing that the overall use of the truck is still going to be city/highway...
Are there downsides switching to 18"?
I will be moving to New Mexico in exactly 1 year and there will be wider opportunities to go off-road.
Any thoughts?

Hi Axel,

I do plan to get the 18" Compomotives at some point, but for now the Cooper Zeon LTZs are plenty capable for me. To be honest, unless you are doing some serious off-roading, or in areas of the Sierra with really sharp rocks, the Coopers should be ample. A friend of mine is nuts and runs Coopers on his Range Rover and he goes through anything - I would never do the things he does. I plan to get the 18" wheels sometime next year, so in the meantime I wanted to get the Coopers since they are not that expensive and I was able to sell my stock Contis for a good price (they are brand new).

I don't think there are downsizes to switching to 18" wheels, though if you go with a certain size tire (other can chime in with details), you may need rods or something to clear the fenders. There are folks on the list (like Umberto and Kaaae, etc.) who run the 18"s and have tons of information.

Personally, I like the Coopers because they are a nice blend on and off the road - face it, we spend most of our time on the road. They also have a nice aggressive look.

Hi David,

Thank you for your answer.

Indeed we sadly are most of the time on the road.

I contacted Compomotive UK a couple weeks ago and they replied to me immediately (Barry). The wheels are cheaper if you buy them directly from Compomotive than if you get them through 15fiftytwo.
See the link below:

I might just get a set of Cooper as you did rather than the smaller wheels but I'm not sure yet. I believe that I've read that the LTZ aren't good at all in the snow. I know you're in California but what's your opinion on this?

I am also going to order the 18" compos soon. I seriously think we are building about the same truck. I've just got voyager versions of the same stuff.

Nice Work Sir!

I am in San Carlos and work in Foster City (pretty close, so I bike). Though, I teach in Santa Clara sometimes (UCSC Extension).

The Northern CA Land Rover club meets the first Saturday of the month at Hollister Hills SVRA. You should join us sometime, as Morgan Hill is not too far.

What subject matter do you teach?

Thanks for the invite. Perhaps one day I'll stop by to say "Hi'. I'm not big on HH SVRA. My preference is more for exploring remote areas versus tackling an obstacle(s).

Thanks, buddy. Yeah, we are definitely on the same path together as far as modifying our trucks. I am likely going to hold off on ordering the Compomotives until early next year.

At UCSC Extension I teach medical writing.

There are some trails through the woods at Hollister and that's what I usually do. I also prefer more of the expedition off roading and I'm not really into obstacles. I actually don't do any obstacles in the old course.

Where have you been? Anywhere close by?

Hi David,

I've been exploring for the past 13 years and I've learning that my preference is for remote areas, some that don't have a name and with my crappy memory I'll never find again.

That being said, I've been to most of the obvious ones multiple times...

Death Valley
Rubicon
Barney Riley
Deer Valley
Black Rock
Slick Rock
John Bull
Anza Borrego
Strawberry Pass
Mojave Rd
Laurel Lake
Bristlecone Forest
Canyon de chelle
Valley of the gods
Monument Valley
Arches national park
A bunch of places in around Moab (I need to spend more time there)

That's AWESOME! :)

Moab and Zion are my favorite, but I am very partial to UT since that's my second home. We split our time between CA and Hildale/Centennial Park, AZ area.
