HELLO ALL,

I HAVE BEEN READING THIS FORUM FOR A MONTH AND HAVE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL OF INFORMATION. I MUST THANK YOU ALL FOR THE EDUCATION.

RECENTLY I HAVE DECIDED TO SELL MY JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE AND PURCHASE MY VERY FIRST LAND ROVER. I SIMPLY LOVE THE CLASS AND CAPABILITY OF THE LR4. I AM LOCATED IN A SMALL TOWN IN ONTARIO, CANADA, SO OPTIONS ARE LIMITED FOR ME. I HAVE NO LR DEALERSHIP TO WORK WITH. HOWEVER, I AM CONVINCED I MUST OWN ONE OF THESE VEHICLES, SO I WILL PURCHASE A VEHICLE AND HAVE IT SHIPPED TO ME. I RECENTLY TEST DROVE A 2012 FULLY LOADED LR4 WITH HD PACKAGE AND ALL, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE SOLD QUICKLY AND I MISSED MY CHANCE. I HAVE NOW STARTING THINKING ABOUT EXPANDING MY BUDGET AND POSSIBLY FINDING SOMETHING NEWER WITH LOWER KM. I UNDERSTAND THAT LR OWNERSHIP CAN HAVE ITS CHALLENGES, HOWEVER RELIABILITY IS HUGE FOR ME WITHOUT HAVING AN LR DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS IN MY HOME TOWN.

I REALIZE THAT MY QUESTIONS HAS PROBABLY BEEN DISCUSSED IN THE PAST, HOWEVER I WANTED TO ASK THE FOLLOWING SINCE SO MANY OF YOU HAVE BEEN WITH YOUR LAND ROVER FOR YEARS...

MY BURNING QUESTION: IF YOU WERE TO DO IT ALL OVER... IF YOU WERE BUYING YOUR VERY FIRST LR4, AND YOU HAD A REASONABLY FLEXIBLE BUDGET: WHAT LR4 WOULD YOU BUY AND WHY? YEAR? MODEL? OPTIONS? COLOUR? INTERIOR COLOUR? (I REALLY LIKE THE BEIGE LEATHER) MAX KM YOU WOULD RISK ON USED VEHICLE? ETC.

I LIKELY WON'T BE ABLE TO FIND A CPO VEHICLE... WHICH OF THESE VEHICLES DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST RELIABLE (LEAST AMOUNT OF POSSIBLE TIMING CHAIN ISSUES; WATER PUMP FAILURES; AIR SUSPENSION ISSUES; BRAKES; ETC).

AS AN ASIDE: IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE A FLEXIBLE BUDGET AND WANTED THE BEST 'VALUE' MONEY COULD BUY, WHAT LR4 WOULD YOU PURCHASE?

I LIVE IN NORTHERN ONTARIO AND HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO SOME OFF ROADING, HOWEVER WHAT I WILL BE USING THE VEHICLE FOR MOSTLY IS MY DAILY 10-15 MINUTE COMMUTE. I STILL WOULD LIKE THE ABILITY TO DEAL WITH THE INTENSE WINTER WEATHER (DEEP SNOW) AND MUD / OFF-ROADING. I AM UNLIKELY TO DO ANY ROCK CRAWLING OR ANYTHING ADVANCED.

I REALLY DO LOVE THE REDESIGNED FRONT END OF THE 2014+ MODELS, HOWEVER I DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THE V6 SC.

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE FOR READING, AND TAKING THE TIME TO REPLY. IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I CAN'T WAIT TO SOME DAY POST MY PICTURES OF MY VERY FIRST LR4 ON THE FORUM.

BEST,
ALAN

Welcome Alan! If you never owned a V8 then you would be fine with the SCV6 as well. If going V8, go with a 2013.

If not rock climbing, then you don't need the heavy duty package with the rear locker on a V8. (2013 & older) But if buying a V6 (2014 & newer) then you should find one with a heavy duty package. Starting in 2014, they added low gear to the heavy duty package and it's worth getting. I know, it confusing the way they bundled the heavy duty package. Just remember that you don't need it with the V8 but do need it with the V6.

IMO, it's worth getting an HSE-LUX. The LUX package adds nicer leather, better radio, memory seats, cooler box, more interior lights and more.

Finally, find one with a good maintenance record. If on a tight budget and buying high mileage, know that at around 75K miles you will need to replace many front suspension parts. (Control arms, ball joints, bushings, possibly both front hub assemblies) Find one where the first owner already took care of this.

Good luck with your search!

I would go with: 2013 HSE LUX dark grey over tan leather. I currently have a 2010 Ipanema Sand (beige lol)over tan leather HSE LUX with vision package.

What town are you in and how far is the nearest LR dealer?

We don't mind helping you but you will also need to take off the Caps Lock.

Good advice here. I just got the 75k/80k service done on my 2012 (V8) and it wasn't a trivial expense. I was pretty happy to do it as the LR4 has been a very low maintenance vehicle for all of those miles.

I like the V8 too, but really, I think most will be happy with the LR4 in either engine config.

I have really enjoyed my LR4 and am starting its second life as a much more off-road oriented machine. Such a great combination of storage space, off-road prowess and a comfortable ride. I think you will be happy with whatever one you get.

Ditto on the caps lol, but I'd personally go with the V8 over the V6. I have a 2011 with 77k miles and have not have any timing chain issues as of yet.

Out of pocket expenses were front suspension bushings, three batteries, a few pairs of brakes and one rotor job, and a licence plate bulb light going out.

Dealer expenses when it was under warranty was a water pump at 41k miles and a front left airbag that had a slow leak at 50k.

So anything between a 2010-2013 is fine. Obviously a 2013 would be a tad bit more reliable, but it all just depends on your luck. You could get a troublesome 2013, and a reliable 2010 or vice versa. I recommend factoring in an additional $3-5k up in the bank and just save in an account for when or if you would need a costly repair. That way you're financially and mentally prepared for it and it wouldn't hit you so hard. Make sure it has the vision assist package and the cold weather package since you're up in Canada. The upgraded headlights and climate comfort package is crucial!!

If I were shopping specifically for an LR4 right now I'd patiently seek out a nice 2013 - no timing chain issues and the newest/last year of the V8. But if I were just shopping for a Rover right now I'd be looking at a '14-'15 RRS since it still has the V8 and newer everything else.
