My discovery 4 has over 22500 on it and it sounds great it just had a full service along with 2 new tyres as I had 2 slow leaks both on the left they would drop between 5 and 10 psi over a 2 week period one was a nail which they said could be fixed and one was a piece of glass in the side wall which they could not repair but I decided to fit 2 new ones and had them fitted on the front they were priced at £120 but they gave me a £20 discount for buying 2 at the same time, getting back on topic my discovery was a motorway police car and spent most of it's time cruising along at 60 mph and anything it needed it had straight away as the tax payer was footing the bill.
I expect it to keep on going for another 100000 miles without any major problems as long as it is serviced on time.

Great thread! Just purchased a 2013 HSE with 72,000 miles on it. It had its 75K service already but since I wanted to start from a clean slate, I just did a full fluids swap (front and rear diffs, t-case, transmission fluid and filter), and pollen filter.

According to the service history, water pump was replaced at 47,000, and the air compressor at 53,000.

EDIT: JUST COMPLETED the coolant crossover pipes pre-emptively to avoid issues and probably look at the timing chain assembly and fuel injectors and spark plugs soon. Also aiming to cut the LR maintenance record in half and do regular oil changes / safety checks every 7500 miles, vs. 15 which is LR spec.

2011 HSE LUX 90,500 miles.

I got hit with two big repairs back to back:
  • Timing Chains @77k done at LR dealer
    • new water pump, new spark plugs done at the same time
  • Complete Transmission Rebuild @77k by ZF (LR dealer recommended)
    • Dealer arranged transfer of trans to and from ZF reman facility
I purchased the truck used from an Acura dealer in NorCal about 2 years ago. Negotiated the price down by $8k since I could hear the time chains rattling on start up. Usually, I'd turn and run from a gas truck sounding like a diesel but it was hard to pass up. The truck had all the features I was looking for and I knew that I would get the repair done for far less than the money saved on negotiation, if, in fact, it needed repair. Which, as it turns out, it did. :/

The tranny had issues about a month after purchase shifting between 2nd and 3rd on occasion and would sometimes slip out of gear on the highway when driving for over an hour or so and go then into limp mode.

Called all the shops in town, and ultimately took it the LR dealer. They took great care of me and worked with me on the total price the repair, which surprisingly came out to less than many of the indy shops in and around town. Not to mention they gave me a new $120k Supercharged Range Rover (with only 6miles on the ODO) to drive for 3 weeks while they had my truck at no extra charge. It was fun!

I spent $10K for the repairs taxes and all. Engine warranty 1 year and Transmission warranty 2 years. She drives fantastic now, haven't regretted it one bit.

I take care of my cars and like to wrench on the weekends. Change the oil in the LR every 5k miles with Motul 948B (Amazon price now $37 per 5 liter here). All drive line fluids drained and filled.

Other items replaced:
  • Battery @77k
  • All new rotors and pads (Akebono) @85k

Items on my radar:
  • Sticky e-brake
  • Tiny radiator leak
  • Suspension fault once in a blue moon. Thinking that the compressor is next.

I wheel the truck in its current form with 20's and Terra Grappler G2s 285/50/r20 on moderate rocky Jeep trails. Nothing crazy, but enough to get a wheel or two in the air.

Looking forward to kitting her out this winter for next season.

Dang. That Motul has dropped about $12 per 5-liter in the last few months. I need to buy some up at that price.

Good luck with your purchase. The Timing Chain Tensioner issue is pre-2013

Thanks. Yes, I have been looking through the forums and wondered if my vehicle may not have that issue, thanks for the heads up.

Took it in today for a pre-emptive coolant crossover pipe replacement before taking it on a 10 day trip. Didn't want the worry!

There are some posters (who I know are Land Rover techs) on the Land Rover owners Facebook Group who say even the post-2013 models have timing chain issues, and that Land Rover is currently underway on a second redesign of the timing chain guides. When I've asked there, they've said that it does seem there could have been issues with the oil change intervals on those particular vehicles.

I was briefly looking at used L405s, and the service records on those (at least, as reported by Carfax and the like) show that people take the Land Rover recommended 15k oil change intervals to heart, and a lot of those are stretched out to 17k or more. I think a huge portion of Land Rovers are leased vehicles, and people who lease a vehicle just want to do the bare minimum before turning their car in after 3 years.

Anyway, point is, I believe a sub-7k oil change interval is pivotal to long engine health, no matter the vintage.

Well that's certainly disheartening but on the other hand, I never allowed myself to feel completely invincible just because I own a 2013. Everything's a hedge with these vehicles. All part of the fun. We ARE having fun, right??:stupid::cool:
