hi everyone im new to this forum and i just wanted to say hi before asking my question. I have a 1995 range rover 4.0SE and the problem with it is this time is that the catalic converters are clogged... completely, even though this truck only has 100k miles anyways its caused because the trucks been running rich because of some sensor isnt working good. this truck has 4 oxygen sensors two after the converter and two before them. is it possible to cut them out and just put a straight pipe but leave the oxygen sensors there or is this going to cause alot of problems, such as check engine light and improper fuel to air mixtures?

thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

welcome to the forum.

First Legally I would never recommend someone removes the CATS it is illegal, but that being sad if you were to remove them, you would always have a check engine light for the O2 sensors and it would still run rich.

It is probably running rich due to a bad O2 sensor, or a fuel temp sensor.

First of all, how do you know they are clogged, Do you have and fault codes, if so what are they? If you remove the cats as Joey has mentioned, your system will run poorly both by mileage and power.
Do it right, find what is causing the problem, fix that then go have 2 new cats installed by a local exhaust shop, consider using so high performance low pressure replacements which are pretty cheap.

well thanks for the advice but i had it scanned and it came up with some error codes and the guy ordered me a coolant temperature sensor apperantly its always running as if the car is cold... which is causing alot of carbon build up, and as the mechanic was looking at the truck he noticed that the was carbon come out between the exhaust manifold and the engine and he then told me that the cats can be blocked and he performed a two second test by putting his hand on the end of the exhaust pipe and having another person rev the engine high in the end his hand had no problem staying glued to the end of the exhaust pipe. under the truck at every flang you can see quiet clearly that carbon is being pushed out between them.

anyways i went to a garage that only does exhaust systems and the guy told me that the only thing that i could do is put back the original ones because its a NAS complient truck and has 4 O2 sensors so i would have to change the entire Y pipe. Apperantly cutting and splicing in aftermarket cats isnt possible either because of how close the O2 sensors. does anyone have any experience with this? i have a really good feeling that it is completly possible to cut in new cats for the truck, any suggestions to what can be done?

There are a few things you need to do, like an induction cleaning to get rid of the internal carbon build up, flush the crank case to get rid of a lot of sludge build up, new plugs and yes you can have new cats installed. If you want help with this, send me your tele number and I'll walk you thru this.
