2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

That sounds like quite a job. When I pulled my heads to change the gasket, one of the first things I did was check the sleeves. Luckily, all were ok. I'm still disappointed that I've had these issues with less than 60k. But, I love this truck (when it is running well)!

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

Just want to follow up on this. I used KW block sealer this past weekend with great results. No more misfires, no CEL and the engine is running much smoother at start up. I can't believe this stuff works. We'll see how long it lasts....but for $8 and 20min job I'm really happy with the...

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

Thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll pull off the Right head again when I have some time...or swap it for a used one that I can find cheap.

    big problem, inspection

I had this happen on my '04 disco. No CELs but it was these readiness codes. Turns out if you have disconnected your battery or re-set any CELs, you will need to drive about 75-100 miles or so to turn them off. For me, I had all 5 readiness codes flash when I tried to get an inspection (I had...

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

So, just to follow up on this. I ended up replacing both head gaskets. What a PITA job....about a 20hr job in total. Anyway, what was interesting was that the old gaskets looked ok to me...no noticeable tears or holes that would allow blow-by. The heads / valves were also in decent shape...

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

Thanks for the quick response. Yeah, I forgot to mention that seafoam was the first thing I tried....with no change. Ran a few bottles through the gas too. Think I should just bite the bullet and pull the heads? I'd hate to do the job and still have the same issues...

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

I performed a compression test, and the numbers don't really indicate a gasket leak....or do they? Test was performed after truck was fully warmed up, all plugs removed, fully charged battery with throttle wide open. #2:155 #4:143 #6:144 #8:136 #1:151 #3:150 #5:146 #7:142 What concerns me is...

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

Funny....I had ordered another set of STI wires just to check this. Unfortunately, after changing the wire I'm still getting the #6 misfire. I just ordered my gasket set and head bolts today to do the job after xmas. I'm a little disappointed that I'm having these issues at <60k miles, but...

    Plug, Wires & Coils

Agree in that you should definitely start with the wires and plugs, and then clean the MAF sensor with electrical cleaner spray.

    98' disco NEED HELP!!!!

Hi, just curious as to how long it took you to complete the head gasket job? Did you require any special tools, besides the shop manual or torque wrench? Thanks.

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

Just pulled the plugs tonight....they all looked the same to me, then again, they were replaced about 3k miles ago when I did the wires. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to sell me a new engine. I was hoping to get at least 100-130k miles out of this engine until I needed a new...

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

Hi everyone, I've had a P0306 (#6 cyl engine misfire) intermittently now for about 5,000 miles. The check engine light (with this code) usually comes on when I start the rover and drive it before letting it warm up - but this only occurs maybe only 2-3 times/month and the CE light it will...

    Towing with a '03 Discovery HSE7???

I tow 6500lbs, no issues.... Hi, I tow my 27' boat with my '04 Disco with no issues. Boat weighs about 5500lbs and the trailer is about 1200lbs. 6700lbs in total, and I've totaled at least 300 miles if you sum my trips. I use the low range when I'm off the highway and keep the speeds...

Coolant smell, sloshing sound, but Rad is full....any ideas?

Ah, I didn't think of that....makes sense that the air pocket would be making the exposed metal hot - and that the sloshing effect could be "burning" off a little bit of coolant. Thanks for the tips....I'm heading off to my favorite trail this weekend to find a steep grade to get that front...

Coolant smell, sloshing sound, but Rad is full....any ideas?

oK - Front up or front down? I'll give it a try, but I still don't think this would explain the coolant smell?

Oh yeah, sorry....this is a 2004 Discovery SE. 55k miles.

Coolant smell, sloshing sound, but Rad is full....any ideas?

Hi all, I've done quite a bit of searching in this forum for my issue, but I still can't figure it out. About 3 months ago, I started hearing a water sloshing sound coming from the passenger side of the instrument panel. Sure enough, my coolant was about 2 pints low. I filled it up, and...

    What's in your garage?

wow, lots of Audis here.... I had an A4 years ago, fun car to mod. My stable: 2004 Discovery SE (mine) 2001 Volvo V70 T5 (wife's, looking to sell) 2008 Volvo XC70 (wife's new car) 2002 Mazda Miata SE (mine, lots of fun mods)

    Misfire Problem?

I've done a wire replacement on an 04 SE without removing the plenum....it is a PITA though. Removing the plenum probably would not have made the job any faster, but it would have been easier to reach the coil packs.
