I have a Land Rover Discovery with 91,000 miles on her. I have no problems really so far with the truck except for two that I can't seeme to get fixed. One being the terrible studder in 4th gear that has been going on for the past 40,000 miles. I have had 3 garages look at it, changed the plugs, run high test in it and nothing works. I did not change the VSS sensor yet because I have no check engine light on and also my cruise control works fine so that must not be it. Any Help???
The next question is if the truck is in 4th gear and I come to a quick stop, it feels like the truck can't downshift quick enough and i hear a clunk and feel a ****. This only occurs when stopping quickly, if I stop normally it does not happen. All these problems only occur in 4th gear and has been a problem for the past 40,000 miles. The tranny otherwise shifts great, very smooth and had the fluid checked 2 weeks ago and it was very clean so i did not have it changed. Any comments please I need help!!!!

Please describe the 4th gear studder... when does it happen at what speed? Sounds like the VSS to me since it is a 4th gear only issue.

The other problem could be the front driveshaft clunking, remember it doesn't have a grease fitting and they tend to come apart. When they do come apart they take out the transmission as well.

The studder happens when the vehicle just shifts into 4th gear and when the truck is at its lowest rpm for 4th gear about 35 - 40 miles per hour, when this studder occurs if you hit the gas real hard i hear a very loud clunk. If i do that same action in any other gear it does not.

Loud clunk does not sound good at all. I don't think this is a VSS issue, should more like a serious Transmission issue. But then again I don't know alot about Transmissions.... I would find a good Rover mechanice and offer him a 12 pack of his favorite beverage to look it over.

Hey - I might actually have an idea...

My 2002 DII started doing this exact thing. After 2 visits to the dealer it was determined that my Drive shaft was self destructing. It would cause the whole vehicle to shudder when you gave it enough gas to accelerate, but not downshift (mine is auto).

You did say that this has been happening for some time - so I could be wrong. Mine lasted about 2800 miles from when it started to when the dealer found it.
