Hello all. I recently bought a 91' Range Rover, 150k miles. It was a good deal; the engine and exterior are more or less solid, needs some work but nothing super-major. Still, some of the issues I'm having are just beyond me. I was hoping I could get some help.

1. If I start the car I can run it for a good while, maybe fifty miles or so. After this, it has the tendancy to just die for no reason. When I try to restart it it won't turn over, or if it does it will die immediately. I smell a great deal of
fuel when this happens, but if I wait an hour or two, I can run it again.

2. The transmission freaks out, but only if I'm going up hill between sixty and seventy and slam on the gas. It starts shifting up and down erratically.

And two really basic questions... I'm sorry, but it didn't come with an owners manual and I'm waiting till Tuesday for the shop manual. What kind of fuel does it prefer: Premium, Super? Also, the transfer case is supposed to be in 4 high for everyday use, right?

Easy stuff first.

4 high for everyday use would be correct.

Fuel... the highest octane you can buy 92 - 94

Transmission issues could be Vehicle Speed Sensor or Transmission ECU.

The other issues (running problems) sounds like a fuel pump issue or fuel temp sensor.
