Ok, here's a new one for me.. Bear with me as I try to explain in detail and save having to add more info later..

My 'Check Engine' light is on, and supposedly there should be some sort of digital display on a module under the passenger side seat that gives me a fault code. However, it looks like the previous owner replaced that module with a newer one that does not display the codes. I think it says it's for a '99 Rover on it written in yellow like it came from a salvage yard. If i am looking at the wrong thing, let me know but I see nothing else under there.

I have a slight external head gasket leak so we put some stop leak in to hold it over for a month or so until it gets warm enough to ride my motorcycle all the time and I can get it fixed. This fixed the leak but I am seeing something odd that I cannot explain, so any and all advice is welcome.

When driving from a cold start, after about 4 miles the temp will get hot. The guage will run right to the limit, just under the red zone.. and then instantly will fall into the normal range where she always runs. Sometimes this will repeat after another 3 to 4 miles, but most times it does not repeat and it stays where it always does, even n long trips it does not repeat.

I have no reason to distrust the guage, my nose tells me it is correct as I smell "hot" more than usual. It has never gone into the red and always follows the above pattern. If I stop and restart it and it's still warm, it stays normal.

My thoughts, and a pure guess as I'm an idiot:

1: Could the thermostat be clogged or partially from the stop leak?
2: Is there a sensor telling the thermostat to release? and could it be failing and possibly causing the "Check Engine" light to come on too?

I unplugged the module under the passenger seat to clear the Check Engine light, but it came back on after about 10 miles.

The vehicle runs great and has no other symptoms of anything wrong.. gas milage is normal as is performance. Coolant fluid is the correct type and mixture, and is full. One of my first thoughts was an air bubble.

Order of events:
The head gasket leak came before the check engine light issue. In hindsight probably by months. It was such a small leak it took time to find it.
The check engine light came on before the temp running hot appeared, by weeks.
Adding the 'stop leak' came before the temp issue, it started right after adding the stop leak so I have to think the two are related somehow.

I doubt it's related but I also had a new exhuast but only from the muffer back (muffler, tailpipe and hangers), the 'check engine' light was on before that however.

Thanks to any and all who reply.. I love my Rover.... and want to keep it until she falls apart.

I would never use stop leak on a Rover, too great of a chance for major issues.

Just be careful if you do have to drive it... when you do change the head gasket, remember to flush the entire coolant system, replace the T-stat, and I would change the hoses.

This should get rid of any leftover stop leak.

Make sure the heater is on when you flush and the engine is running to get rid of any extra.
