help 95 Disco I

is it normal for the oil plug to be this 1 and 1/4 inches?
if it is some weird replacement do I need to replace pan.
I am losing some oil but do not smell burning and there are no dripping leaks but underbody is coated in the stuff.

Sounds like no one has been replacing the brass washer during oil changes or left it out.

Yes the size is correct.

I don't replace the washer every oil change but if you wipe all the oil off the pan betcha dollars to doughnut the oil is migrating to this point. Probably leaking from the rocker covers, power steering pump, and everywhere else but not the plug.

I'd replace the washer and do a thorough cleaning. On the market now are UV dyes that can be added to a system (cooling, PS, oil...) and then illumination with a UV light shows exactly where your leak is coming from. I've had access to these dyes in my lab for years and they helped me ID where my PS leak was coming from.

Those dyes are ok sometimes...... However in the refrigeration trade on a highpressure side I've seen it simply spray the dye everywhere and actually make it more difficult to find the leak. I know my valve covers leak more like a sweat. Engine looses about a quarter quart of oil every 1000 miles. Keeps the outside of the oil pan from rusting out. But I must admit it looks like it's leaking from the drain plug but it's not. It just leaks everywhere else. Someday I'll get a round tuit.
