Hello all,

I have a 96’ Discovery that I purchased 6/13 of this year. Ever since I purchased it there has been overheating issues. When it does this the gauge goes from normal up to ½ to ¾ to H and I loose antifreeze. Here is the series of events

1. Overheated on way back from purchase bout 1.5 hrs away
2. Flushed and new coolant
3. Drove 4 hrs from CT to VT no problems
4. Overheated in Vermont
5. Brought to a VT shop and had a new thermostat put in, obviously the previous owner had it taken out since there was no thermostat.
6. Overheated many times on the way back, kept having to add antifreeze and water and make frequent stops.
7. Brought to local garage, they put in another thermostat and test drove. They said that it didn’t overheat for them and that it seemed fine.
8. Drove it to work and around town with AC on and it did fine for a couple weeks since its my only vehicle. However one time I noticed a small coolant leak on the left side after driving for about 25 minutes the area has not leaked since.
9. I brought it to another garage they pressure tested it, looked it over and let it run for 2 hours and it didn’t overheat. They couldn’t find the coolant leak that I had noticed before. I drove it today without the AC and it overheated. The gauge was normal for a while 30 min but then went up to ½ then to ¾ and a little more, then going down some hills it returned to normal.

I am completely stumped, the water pump looks new and it’s obviously not the thermostat or the auxiliary fans. What does this sound like to everyone? I will try to provide any more information that would be needed. Thanks, Tom

I Would say either the radiator needs replaced, or you have some serious blockage in the engine.

I would also check the fan clutch.

I concur. There's either a blockage in the engine, or your radiator is shot. Could be both.

Reverse flush the rad . If that doesn't work, I fear a warped head/duff head gasket, if it is the V8. (don't think you got the 2.5 diesel in the states) Remove the oil filler cap; if it is gungy on the underside with whiteish crap, instead of just oily, a head gasket has blown. If your luck is really bad, a head will have warped, too; tho' as it doesn't seem to boil up or lose lots of water, you might be OK!

A reverse flush on the Radiator will not allways fix it. LR's are known for clogged Radiators, I would have it flow tested, if it fails, Recore or replace per you radiator guys recommendation.

Personally I would have a custom radiator built so I could get rid of the 4 way hose.

Well, yesterday I brought my 96’ Disco back to the garage it was last in. Fortunately they didn’t charge me since they couldn’t tell me what was wrong the first time; unfortunately it is the head gasket that is causing the issues. They told me that they took it on the highway and got it warm then did a compression and chemical test on it. Evidently the chemical test showed that there was carbon dioxide in the cooling system. Now my question is how likely is it that the heads are warped or cracked given what I have provided for info? They said for head gasket they would charge $770.00 for labor (~10 hours) plus materials but this is if the heads are alright. Thanks, Tom

Tom.. Where in CT are you? I fear my 96 also needs a head gasket.. although I'm not yet at the stage of over heating, I do have oil in the radiator (no coolant in the oil though). $770 sounds like a great price for a head gasket job. I'm in East Hampton, CT (near Middletown on the east side of the river)

Well I am in Andover, CT and the garage is Tarca’s in Hebron 860.228.1200. They are a good place with great employees but I may bring it to a garage in Glastonbury where my cousin works, at least there I know he won’t fix more than is needed. I am a college student and can’t afford for them to replace things and such that really don’t have to be just to cover themselves. Tom
