First, if you have to replace your's go to a new t5/case, say a 97 or 98, they have a lot less problems.
If you are looking for a good used t/case you might want to contact Paul Grant for a good price and large selection.

is the '97 or '98 T5 case an identically appearing, straight bolt in replacement? I am working with a shop that is already pretty sensitive about me bringing them the parts...please advise, thanks!

The 96 t/case had many flaws including bad bearing oiling and seals.
If the shop gets the feeling hurt easily better find a new one.
By the way, how much were they going to charge for that used 96 t/case.

Hi, the transfer cases I had located are as follows:

Car Cannibal $495 shipped, 98k miles, 6 mo warranty
Sharper Edged Engines $600 shipped, 58k miles, 90 day warranty
Quality Auto Parts $480 shipped, A grade, 30 day warranty

I am obviously open to suggestions and other sources. Thanks for your feedback.

What years were those t/cases from?

So you are willing to pay easily twice the money for one of the worst t/case used in a 96!
You can buy a newer model for much less.
