We just got our 1996 Discovery and it needs a little work. My main concerns right now are breaks and turn signals.

There are no turn signals or hazards. You get no light in the dash when you flip the switch on the steering column or the hazard button. I have checked and all bulbs seem good. All fuses are good as well. Is there a common place to look for issues here?

Thanks,

Andy

Check the bulb sockets in the rear for over heating and distorting the bulb socket.

Update

Well, we've had the truck for a few weeks now and I am liking it more and more. Things are relatively easy to fix and there is a lot of info available. The turn signal issue persists though. I have checked all of the bulbs and sockets, the left front was full of water, so that probably wasn't good. Then I replaced the flasher unit, after that we saw movement. The hazards work now and the turn signals go on breifly and then blow the #1 fuse. So I started following the wires back from the turn signals to clean the grounds and found that the bundle of wires that run behind the jack, the air filter box, and the brake components are all melted. I am assuming at this point that this is the issue because I followed the turn signal wires into that area.

My questions:

Has anyone else had this problem? If so what was the fix?

Is there wire diagram available?

What else would be affected by those wires meting?

Does anyone notice the heat from that area? The paint on my hood is actually bad in that spot from the heat generated.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Andy

Wire Diagram is in the Rave (download via my Signature)

Haven't seen this before, but anything is possible as far as burnt wires.

When I see that sort of stuff I wonder if someone didn't remove a heat shield at some time in the past. If you replace the wires one by one you won't need a diagram, just be sure to solder them and use a heat resistant tape or shrink wrap. I have a 2004 and there are several places where things are shielded with heat deflectors etc. Since your entire engine compartment on one side is scorched, how about a heat shield that covers the exhaust manifold is missing? Air flow into the engine compartment is being blocked by some silly accessory? Radiator is blocked?
How about putting an oven thermometer (borrowed from the kitchen) in the engine compartment and take it for a drive?
I would solve the heat problem before I changed the wires.
