I just got an '01 Disco II. It had been sitting (some of the time wide open) for a year or so and there are a lot of water damage/mold issues I'm addressing. Right now, I'm trying to get to the filter above the blower under the glove box. I got the blower out (it was packed with leaves), but the filter right above it is jammed up with mold/crap (see picture). Before I proceed to a point of no return, I want to have some clue of what I need to do. Anyone had any luck with this? Thanks in advance.

I just looked at mine also. Not really sure that is a filter...looks more like a flapper for the defrost air re-direct. There is one on each side and they move when selecting between defrost and auto settings. Looks to me like the system has no air filter anyway. :/

You do not have a filter except for the cabin filter under the windshield in the engine compartment.
Pull the blower motor to get to the leaves, make sure your drain tubes are not plugged causing water to build up.
