I have a P38 1997 Range Rover 4.6 HSE. I have noticed that on occassion the 'open book' symbol displays and is also accompanied by a faint burning smell. I am aware that this indicates a problem with the Climate Control and could prove costly - Can anyone give me advice on how I could diagnose and remedy the problem myself, rather than having to pay a large some of money to a dealership?

G'day Pegasus
Have you checked the underbonnet fuse box? In the right hand front corner there are two yellow relays for the fans. With the ignition switched off remove the two relays and see if the fuse box under them has cracked and burnt slots for the relay terminals.

Do you get noise and vibration with the fans on high speed? If so you may have foreign material in the blower housing. Remove the polen filters and shine a light down into the blower housing (recirc must be off).

Either a dealership or someone with aftermarket diagnostic equipment (RovaCom etc.) has to connect and find out what the HeVAC ECU thinks is wrong and then clear the fault memory. If you have heater core temp fail you will need to fit a link lead to the sensor.

Wires,

The fusebox is okay and I cant see any foreign objects. There doesnt appear to be any leakage either from any of the pipes and at present the 'book' symbol has disappeared. Its booked into a Landrover specialist later in the week for a diagnostic anyway, just to be safe.

Many thanks
