OK, I like to think I know a little when it comes to my autos, but I've got a question. I'm actually kinda imbarrassed to ask this, but here goes:

Does the Auxiliary Belt have a visible seam? In other words, is there a visible line on the ribbed side that runs accross the ribs?

Why I ask? Well I'm going on a road trip (approx 800 miles) through pretty tough heat conditions (Phoenix to LA and back). In my usual pre-trip inspection checking the belt etc..., I notice this "line" in the belt. I had this replaced about 15K miles ago according to my records. I have no reason to believe that I was charged for a new belt without it being installed. These things are supposed to have a 75K mile life. The belt appears in good shape otherwise. The belt is a Land Rover stamped part, not OEM. I've never set eyes on a new uninstalled belt to know, is this a seam line or otherwise or am I looking at a crack that could fail anytime? BTW- My disco is a '98 with approx 70k miles, I mention this because if it is the original belt, then it would be about due to be replaced. As I said, I paid for a replacement at about 55k miles.

Your help, suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Also, how hard is this to replace for a DIYer? I'm pretty handy, but don't want to get involved in something over my head. I have the shop manual and seems pretty straight-forward.

If I recall correctly there is no visable line on the ribbed side of the belt. But without seeing it I can't be sure. I know my aftermarket belt from Advance Auto doesn't have a line on it.

As far as hard to replace, it is very easy as long as you have the diagram to put it back with.

I'll try to take a picture, but that's hard because the belt stops in different positions - not always visible. Yeah, I have the diagram. maybe I'll try it.

Thanks
