Black Smoke

I have a 1997 V8 3.9Ltr Land rover Discovery
Some time its working fin but most of the time black smock is coming out
Any one know how to fix it

first the 97 has a 4.0 liter unless it was changed, when you say black smoke, is this when you first start it, all the time it runs or just when you accelerate hard?
