I have a Disco 1 and I'd like a tougher sound and some improved performance, but the only exhaust for it is the Borla which runs like $500. I'm sure this is a good exhaust, but has anyone had any luck with a custom catback or should I stick with the Borla system?

I have Borla cat back on a 95 Di 5-speed with 4.6. RPI chip Piper cam and high flow cats. It sounds like a 289 Mustang with long glass packs, all good but one problem (there are two) it has a drone rpm zone. Between 62 and 70 mph which is normal highway rpm's and drone and i'm a performance hot rodder and this is getting to me and more people sitting in the back. I haven't the time but have a Vibrant extra quiet stainless steel flow thru resonator to install before the exhaust tip. Other problem is the muffler sounds like it has a pound of roofing gravel loose inside, rattles worse when cold but still when hot to where people look at me, I tell them I have that Borla sound. Borla "techs" stated 1 in 200 fail and I must use my charge card and order another, ship back the old with bill of sale then they will zero out my charge card, this prevents 3 week down time. I purchased it 5 years 42,000 miles, it's ben rattling the last 20,000 miles. The only good thing it was purchased on a sale and sure beat Rover's price and weight of OEM exhaust. Muffler alone did not show any great performance increase, other above items made it run the way Rover should of made them. With four 200 pound people I can spank a 4.6 powered newer Rover with one person driving.

so would you recommend just installing a flowmaster or something?

I have headers, and a flowmaster 40 series on my disco.... love the sound, but it doesn't really do alot for performance, so if you looking for the best perfromance for your money, I would suggest a second vehicle like maybe a subaru WRX STi or even a Lotus Exige...

If you just want it to sound better, I like the flowmaster sound, and haven't heard a complaint yet.

If you must have flows get the 3 chamber to prevent drone.
To me flows in general sound crappy besides tests show they have a higher restriction than other brands. My muffler friend gave me free two 2 chambers for the 482" FE motor in the pickup, sounded like crap with a lot of drone. He didn't want them back so I the garbage can became their home. Same thing again with a shorter Flow for the Rover until I install Borla, Flow this time sold for $20. "Can't beat that high school kids sound".
There are a lot of Flow knock offs out there also.

Yea I don't like Flomaster all that much anyways... maybe I'll just go with another brand or something, or I may get the borla, I don't know yet... I don't have enough money for either right now lol.

PS... Are there headers available for a 97 discovery 4.0? I've looked and looked and haven't seen any offered, plus I'm in California where they have pretty strict emission laws.

RPI had stock factory stainless headers listed at one time, cost vs power return isn't worth it. A 4.6 to 5.3 liter will feed your power need not beating on a 3.9 motor.

I just can't decide whether to save up for a borla exhaust, or just have a local muffler shop do a catback with a flomaster or something. I figure the Borla would give me the most horsepower, but it'd be like twice the cost too.

Neither will honestly give you enough HP to notice if it even shows up on a Dino.... it is more of a preference than anything...
