There are definitely timing chain issues with any of them , 6 or 8, that follow the ridiculous 12k factory oil change guidelines. There are just less with the post update ones, it wasn't a complete solution.
Biggest thing I've learned in the many years here is that chain getting loose gives you plenty of warning and time to fix it. Coolant pipes not so much, and the coolant pipe thing seems to be worse/more likely in the hot climate located rovers.

I know people have said there are timing chain issues post 2014, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen evidence of it. I remember a lot of people referring to some post from a mechanic on Facebook saying there were a lot of timing chain issues on all the vehicles, but I haven’t seen any real evidence of it. The later models are getting way up in miles now. If there were issues, I think we’d be seeing more posts.

Just to update - I haven't been able to see it yet, but I do have a deposit down on it. Apparently, they sent it out to a "specialist" to have it looked over and have a basic service done and I have requested a copy of those records. Hopefully, I can get the shop name. Hope to see it this week.

Aside from mechanical issues, are you familiar with the drive train options on this car? For the 2014-2016 models, you need the HD package to get low range gearing and locking rear differential. Some people care, others don’t. Seems many people are at least surprised by the missing low range without HD because low range was on all the earlier V8 models regardless of HD. Anyway, thought I’d mention it.

Yep- I have been specifically searching for one with the HD package. It really thins out the herd.

I remember being good about scrolling through the pictures quickly looking for the buttons near the shift dial. There was nothing more maddening than seeing an ad with "HSE Lux, all the options" only to see that there's no HD.

Yep- I don't even want to count the number of hours I've wasted on... "open up listing, find pic of center control stack, close listing". :)

Keep $15,000 tucked away for the occasional engine swap.

Beyond that, ensure you replace the entire cooling system at first purchase unless you have documentation proving it was done within the prior calendar year.

That + 5k oil change intervals and keep an open ear for any timing chain rattle at startup.

They’re great until they aren’t, but they can cost a boat load of money VERY quickly.

Mine has cost more to maintain than my wife’s AMG GLS and all of my M3’s combined (over 150k miles between 3 of them).
