I don’t think there will be any need to swap out an scv6, if you keep up on the maintenance…. of course that implies the previous owner did.

And they are big and heavy…. so suspension, brakes, wear quicker.
But those 5k oil changes are necessary.

Now that I have mine sorted, I’m quite happy.

I know people have said there are timing chain issues post 2014, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen evidence of it. I remember a lot of people referring to some post from a mechanic on Facebook saying there were a lot of timing chain issues on all the vehicles, but I haven’t seen any real evidence of it. The later models are getting way up in miles now. If there were issues, I think we’d be seeing more posts.

I think there's two things going on with the timing chain problems...

First, there were the tensioner / guide problems for 2010-2012 cars, but this was fixed for 2013 on (technically, some late-2022 build ViNs also have the newer guides). So the 2014+ won't suffer that problems.

Second, the long oil change internal (15,000) results in excessive wear at each of the many link pins, with the outcome being that the effective length of the chain becomes longer. This leads to the sprockets getting chewed up (since the tooth spacing vs the chain is longer) and eventually it jumps timing.

I take my car to a reputable independent and have hung out at the shop a bit more than just dropping off / picking up. I've seen them have post-2013 5.0L and 3.0L cars in to have the chains done. He actually suggested the cars with a lot of load on them, either by towing or a lot of trips up and down the mountains that seem to have issues the most.

So, when you're in the market for one, look for a history of 5000-7000 mile oil changes, even if you're looking at 2013+.

For sure there are timing chain issues with the 3L and 5L engines. The issues are different, but both can suffer from failure. If you want to keep a vehicle for a long time then it is worth getting the timing chain (tensioners etc) done when they become noisy. There are no engines (diesel or petrol, althogh the diesels suffer from a host of other problems) that are worry free in the timing chain department I'm afraid.
