Hi all, I am new here and own a 1976 Range Rover. This is my first 4WD and so far I love it.

At the moment I have trouble with the brake lights not working. Globes are ok and the park lights / indicators all work ok. Does anyone know of a known fault in these early RR's. I am in no way electricaly minded so I hope its something simple.

I can only find 1 fuse box in the car ( under bonnet passenger side ). This holds 3 glass fuses, which are all in tact and seem fine. Is there any more hidden in the car anywhere?

Well I hope you can help me with this problem and would appreciate all helpfull replies.

Cheers Rob.

Ok, a few people have viewed this thread but no replies...

Well I have been playing with this for a couple of days now, and discovered thismorning that my lights do actually work. A work mate informed me thismorning they were working...? I had him come over to the car so I could see for myself. well I put my foot on the brake and nothing... So I started it up and turned the lights on and what do you know they worked...! turned the engine off and they stopped working. Turned the ignition on and they started to work again.

Is this the case with all early Range Rovers, or is there a wiring problem I need to get fixed.

Cheers Rob

I didn't reply, because I haven't even seen a 79 RR, let along work on one.... :( but this does sound like something that LR would have done in a vehicle.. Remember it does have Lucas electrics in it.... I once heard that the British drink warm beer, because the fridge was made with Lucas Electrics.

Heehee, I know what you mean Joey. Everyone I speek to about this problem says "they call them Strange Rovers for a reason,,"

Well the brake lights failed me again, this time a policeman was behind me and followed me into a service station. He asked me if I was aware they were not working and of course I said no..! Well he told me to fix them asap.

So I decided to bite the bullet and take the dash off under the steering wheel.
I then took the wires off the plunger switch and joined them together with a paper clip, and the lights worked.:hello:

So I took the switch apart and gave it a good clean with brasso and a nail file, all looks brand new now. Put it back together and tested it before I put it back in the car and all works well. I also hooked up a red light inside the back window to the brakes so I could tell if they were working.

Sorry about the long post but if someone else has a early model RR, this may be of some help.

Cheers Robski.
